10 MPG, rough idle, white smoke, etc.!!!!

I'm new to these and thought I had done good research before buying (that's why I bought a 7.3 instead of a 6.0)

Okay here it is:
I bought this '01 F-350 with 183K and all seemed well until I took it on a trip pulling a trailer (<3500#). After the first trip, it ran rough and smoked, and used 10 quarts of oil (burn and leak). I didn't know about the loss of oil until the the truck would no longer run. it continued to idle rough and smoke, but seemed to run fine going down the road until it died one day 160 miles from home. one $500 tow bill and a new injection pump and regulator later, it ran like a top!! I thought the mystery was solved. I drove it around town for two weeks and 500 miles to make sure it was good before another road trip.

Well, I left last night on a 1000 mile trip pulling the same trailer and all was good, so I thought. The truck is doing the same exact thing now, rough idle, blowing white smoke at idle and some smoke while driving. The oil was low again (3-4 quarts) and you see where oil has "splattered" underneath the truck. The truck does not leak oil in the driveway after "normal" driving; it manifests itself after a long hard trip. And as the title says, I'm only getting 10 MPG or less, both before and after the pump. I'm now 1000 miles away from home and still need to haul it home.

Any ideas from ALL the symptoms?

I bought the diesel to get better mileage while towing, but seems to not have worked out for me now.

im willing to bet part of your problem is leaky up pipes not giving you enough boost and cutting into your mpg's. the oil leak you are gonna have to take some pics and clean the valley out real good with some simple green or something and find where its coming from for us to help you. could be the turbo/pedestal o rings which is an easy fix but it could be the ebpv linkage leaking which is also easy and you can fix all this stuff at one time to make it easy. how big is the trailer? tha will kill the mileage also but i was getting 14.5 mpg's pulling an 11K lb concession on the highway so idk........

post up some pics......

Thank Bill.

The trailer empty is 2400 lbs. and I bet I do not have more than 700 lbs. inside. The truck shouldn't even feel this trailer, but it obviously is negatively affecting the truck when I pull it on long hauls.

I'm out of town now, so pics can't be done until next week. The oil "leak" only happens after it has been worked hard. I had no leaks before the first trip or after the injection pump, only after pulling the trailer.

I'm showing plenty of boost on the gauge, but not sure where it is "plumbed, so that could be a possibility.

contradictory statements....the first one is correct!!!! you should not even feel that trailer and it should not be working your truck hard at all.

I'm right outside Jackson, MS but not stranded, just asking for some advice/help. I'm driving back Sun. and hopefully will
make it.

Sorry for the confusion; when I said work hard, I was referring to pulling the trailer long distance verses driving around without it (ie. "normal").

I strarted it today and it's still idling rough and smoking. I was hoping someone would have the " a ha" moment for me. I may have to wait until I get home really mess around with it.
