Water in fuel light! Help. Black smoke

Hello just got the water in fuel light at the same time as low fuel light. Got Diesel and filled it up and water in fuel light is still on. Can I drain the water out somehow? I am also have black smoke out the tailpipe and lack of power on accerlation sometimes. Could these be connected? Thanks

Well I do know the water in fuel light was a problem for a while. My 2005 had the issue. There was no water but it would come on. Needless to say Ford fixed it and it has never returned. If I ever saw that light, I wouldnt believe it. I have been told on this forum by many that it is VERY sensitive.

The water drain is on the horizontal fuel conditioning module (HFCM).

Park the truck with the front going up hill, stop the engine, and remove the fuel filler cap (gas cap). Using a 6mm Allen wrench remove the brass plug on the HFCM (aluminum looking thing mounted to the inside frame under the drivers seat). Let it drain and then replace the plug being sure not to over tighten it. It has an o-ring seal so just snug the plug. Perform 3 cycles of key on for 3 seconds then key off for 15 seconds to get any air out of the fuel system.

Follow the instructions in the first post of this thread to drain the water:

Thanks but it's counter clockwise correct? 6mm allen?

I have tried twice and cannot get it to move. Granted it's an 03 and don't know if its ever been done. It's counterclockwise turn to left correct? If I strip it what is the next step to get it off or any tricks to getting the 6 mm allen to work. Not much room up there.

Thanks

OK Now I stripped it. Now what?

Well as norm I messed it up. I stripped it and could not get it off. Now what is the next step?

The light has been on for one day how long do I have before damage starts to settle in?

Thanks again for all your help

Now I may have to go to the dealership!!!

You will have to go to the dealer to get a new plug at least, the updated one is steel for that very reason, the brass would strip out. Did you strip the threads or the allen seat? If you stripped the threads you wanna run a tap of the same size through there b/f installing the new plug. If you stripped the allen seat you may want to use an easy out after getting a replacement plug. You really need to get the water out asap if there is some in there.

Some have had success removing a plug with a stripped allen seat by epoxying the allen wrench to the plug.

OK so I glue or epoxy to the head and try to take out that way

OK so I just try to glue or epoxy to the hole and try to get it out that way? I did not damage the threads on the inside.
