If it has the three speed the pattern is reverse up, left, first is down left, second is up and to the right, third, down right. If it has the four speed first is up, left, second down, left, third up, center, forth down, center and reverse it down, to the right. With the four speed you start in second, first gear is very low and used only for pulling.

My '49 has unpainted vent frames.

H pattern, up left = reverse, down left first, up right second. Down right third. Hope that makes sence

looks like silver
does it have RED LINES on the bars?

Can't really tell, the grill has too much surface rust.
