Isn't there supposed a skid plate under the transfer case?

I'm going back to Nevada and plan on wheelin' my X from now on, I just noticed that there is no skid plate under my truck, but there are holes there on the frame rails, either side of the t-case.

I have one on mine but it came with the 4x4 trailer tow package. It included the mirrors, skid plates and rear sway bar.

I bought one and put it in on mine. There are two types. one that goes accross the entire frame, and one that bolts to the crossmember.

If I remember correctly, the one that goes accross the frame was used in the 2000 through 2003 Excursions and Super Duties. They made a change to the crossmember in the 2004 and up that included holes and welded in nuts for a heavy plate version like these in the pics. The ones shown below are not pics from my Excursion, but the plate is exactly the same.

So I need the one for 00-03 then.

Thanks for the pics.

What are those hangers with what look like weights attached on the underside of the cross members? To lower CG?

Without getting lewd, (there are a couple of threads that address that part of the question) the unit is a vibration damper.

Yes they are vibration dampers but I often wondered if they really do anything because I have never seen them on any other vehicles.

Well, I found the pic you want. I highly suggest that you check out your crossmember to see if it has the holes and threads for the new style. If not, then you will have to use the old style.

I bought mine in early 2007. Here is a thread from another website forum where I learned about it and ordered mine. It has all the info I know about the skid plates. There is also a photo link for the one you want. Not the best pic in the world, buth it shows half of it. I don't know why I saved the pics, but the four picture links in the thread below that do not work are the four pictures in my first post.

Here is a JPG of the frame and skid plate from Y2Kfordparts. It is number 6:

Wow . That crossmember is really different from mine. So you know which skid plate you need based on which crossmember you have.

Thanks for the pics, that looks like the one I need.

The local salvage wanted 125.00 for one that was smashed from their forklift, so looks like I need to shop around more, I will likely make my own or beef up a Ford one if I find one reasonably priced.
