Zero/low Boost.

Been a while since I have been around this forum but I have a couple questions.

I was on my way out to the desert this past Fri. I was pulling my toy hauler through the mountains and all of a sudden I lost power and had no boost. I didn't hear any strange loud noise from the turbo, don't remember seeing the check engine light and the EGT's were between 11,000 - 11,500. I looked at the intercooler pipes while on the side of the road and didn't see any that blew off. I had a buddy tow my trailer out for me and another buddy drove my truck home. I am going to start trouble shooting it tonight. I am going to make an adapter to pressureize the intercooler boots and start there. I know also to look at the up pipes. Is it possible to have blown a turbo even if it is still spinning? Anything else to check for? Thanks in advance for all help.

You either blew a boot, or you boost gauge is shot. How's the power & exhaust??

BTW, I'm sure you meant 1100 & 1150. 11,000 is kinda hot. LOL

I lost power going up a hill and looked at the gauges and no boost. Yeah I mean 1100-1150.

When I stopped I attemted to back the truck up to get around a sign that the trailer was close to and I couldn't back the truck up with the load. When we had no load it drove but still low on power. I tried to see if the boots were cracked but I couldn't tell.

You could have snapped the shaft of the turbo, but I doubt it. I would suspect a blow boot.

I hope that I have a blown/cracked boot.

Is there anything else that could cause this situation?

How would a dying tranny cause this? I would think that the boost would be good and the RPM's would be up if it is slipping. I'm not connecting the two

If you're getting high EGTs & black smoke, you blew a boot somewhere. A snapped turbo shaft I would think would be fairly obvious.

Grab your intake wheel and give it a tug. A little side-to-side is okay, but if it hits the housing or there is in & out movement, your turbo is hosed. But it will still make boost usually, barring a snapped shaft.

You can go WOT in park and build practically no boost. The engine needs to be under load to produce enough drive pressure to make high boost.

If you didn't hear any strange noises, then I'm leaning towards a fuel starvation issue.
Lack of fuel will drop the boost and power in a hurry.
The high egt's might have been left over from when it was generating good power.

Good point... A bad fuel pump will cause this same issue... I got stuck years ago coming over santiam pass due to a bad fuel pump. Didn't know it at the time, but it just got weaker and weaker to where I really could not even drive...

Got me starting on my gauge fetish...

Well I got it figured out last night. It ended up being the hose going to the MAP sensor. It blew off of the T that I put in for the Boost gauge. I think I am going to do the IAH delete and put the boost tap there and replace the MAP line.

Thanks for all the quick replies and different possible problems.

I am still wanting to replace the intercooler boots soon. What is everyone using to replace them? Will the aftermarket silicone boots work or is there a better boot to use? Thanks again and I am glad it was an easy fix.
