What starter do you recommend?

Hey,

Well looks like its time to replace the flywheel ring gear, and starter as I had a broken tooth! Just wanted some Input on what starter you guys like! I have a 390 with 184 tooth ring gear!

I see a couple mini starters on summit by powermaster, Any pros or cons bout the mini's? I mean Im sure they fit easier, but im talking like inital wear and power?

What starter you using?

IF your motor is stock, I'd go with an oem or rebuilt starter.
Anything over 11.5:1 I'd go with a aftermarket gear reduction mini starter.

On the OEM starter I swapped the the OEM starter bolts for some Allen head bolts. I then used a old oil pump drive shaft rod with a small shock wrench as an extension to reach the top Allen. Saved my nuckles and finger tips around the hot motor.

Oh and there were no mini starters back in my day.

Hell if ur not running header stay with the stock oe one. Why,if you go on a little trip and have the starter go out what would be the easy one to find first. Hard to change one out in the auto parts parking lot once. It was 12*degrees outside lay in the snow. Had a set of header then that I could change it out with not to much trouble. alot of headers made today you have to remove it to get the oe starter off..my 2cents

I'm running the ROBB Mini starter that Montana suggested. It works fine with my headers. It is made and built in America, by an american. I think if more people purchased american product's, more americans would be working...my 1/2 cent.

Well with Sanderson headers it was a must to use the Mini Starter to be able to remove it with out removing the header. These our ok but, I still like to run the oem stuff as much as. I can when it comes down to the time of needing a fast replacement part..Orich

I have to agree on the stock OEM type if the engine is stock. No hassles.

Just get a GOOD rebuilt. Lots of rebuilds out there are just a clean-em-up-and-paint-em-if-they-turn-under-power.

A good rebuild is taken apart, stator cleaned up, new brushes, bearings, etc, and even HEAT tested. Maybe.

I love it when a chain auto-parts place "tests" a starter on the bench. What are they testing? That the open connection in the windings is closed when it's at room temp? Or that the thing turns with no load on it?

I just went stock for now sense my charging systems is still stock! Figured if I got a mini it would require more juice, that I dont have..... YET! When I add a bigger alt, I will probably get on of the ROBB Mini starter! For now this will work tho!

Thanks for the replys and help!!!

The guy that built my 410 insisted on a mini starter. It lasted about 2 months and sheared all the teeth off the flex plate. I replaced the flex plate and put a cheap 40 dollar rebuilt starter from NAPA and have never had a problem since. 11:1 compression and no problem starting now

Yeah if you don't need it don't run it. Hell way back in 1962, I was running a pumped 1961 390 with 12.1 pistons +cut heads .060 It cranked over ok if timing was kept near the stock settings. Just hard on the those steel head gaskets ford used thou. .
