transfer case fluid

I have a 99 navigator i have read not to use mercon V in the transfer case. I seen ford says to use XL-12 transfer case fluid but on the bottle it says not to use in an AWD vehicle. Any ideas on what i can use.

My Ford Service CD states you are supposed to use Mercon in the transfer case. Mercon V is the replacement for the older Mercon XT-2-QDX. Why are you concerned about using the Ford approved replacement fluid?

The newer Ford guidance says use the XL-12 not the Mercon V. It is not indicated for vehicles with transaxles.

I had heard that the mercon V was breaking the transfer cases. And to use the XL-12 but the bottle says not for AWD so I'm confused. What to use.My vehicle only has 64,000 miles on it so i want to keep all the fluids changed since i tow a camper with it.

Don't make this harder than it needs to be.

You can still buy fluid that meets the old Mercon/Dex III specification including at Walmart. If you don;t want to spring for the XL-12, use a fluid that meets the original specification.
