300? is that a v6? what good is that? no big v8 rumble there
plus your truck is alot more unique and less of them on the road than a 1988 f150
as far as monetary value they are probably close,
but by trading you for your truck he is getting a much better deal
A 300 is a virtually indestructible I-6. Good for pulling stumps, lots a torque and relatively low revving so they last.
The 71 has way more up-side potential. Also, and I know this from experience, the wimmin-folk don't like climbing into a 4x4 with a short skirt, but you can almost always get 'em into a 4x2, even a slammed one!

I'm not sure about on an 88, but on an 85 300, the smog stuff is an elaborate nightmare. A large bank of vacuum/electric switches on top of the valve cover interconnected electrically and vacuum to smog pump, distributor, carb, etc, etc. If any of it is faulty the rest won't work right or pass smog and will run like crap. It can cost a fortune to deal with and still not be right. If you live in a smog **** state, I would be very careful and find out if the 88 still has this primitive/problematic system. Otherwise, it looks like cool truck and depending on where you live, it might be nice to have some modern creature comforts like AC, Cruise, power windows/mirrors, etc.

88 was the 2nd year of the EFI 4.9. They are known to crack heads. It should have either an C6 or T18, but if it's a five speed or AOD I'd walk away since they are notoriously weak in those years.
IMO, there wasn't much of anything "really good" in the 80's made by the big three Americans. I switched to Jap stuff during those years. The 67 to 72 body style ford is about the best looking rigs on the road. However, they are getting old and usually need a lot of TLC. If your handy with your hands and want to keep putting updates and fixing it up, keep the bump. If not I'd be looking for a later model Ford than the 88.
no way man keep the clasic. you can find a cheep 4x4 all over the place. and a shorty bump or dent is way tougher and more dependable. that ttb axel in the front of that trk is week at best. and expencive to fix when not if it breaks. again just my .02
