1974 F350 Super Camper Special Transmission/Rear End Questions.

Hello everyone. I have had my 1974 F350 Ranger Super Camper Special for about a year now. I had to replace the flywheel which was a big pain but completely worth it cause now it actually starts every time I turn the key. I also put in an Edelbrock Performer air intake and a Holley Double Pumper 850cfm that my brother nabbed off a racing boat he worked on, and this thing screams. The problem is gas mileage at best is about 4mpg, yes I said four. The Super Camper Specials are geared for hauling/towing however I am not hauling any large trailers/loads so I dont really need the higher gear ratios. Anyhow my questions:

1. Will the 4 speed Ford AOD transmission hook up to the 460 in this truck?
2. If not, are there any other 4 speed tranny's that will?
3. What rear end gear's are recommended to maximize gas mileage?

I realize the notion of trying to get good gas mileage out of a 460 is silly, however I would like to improve it to about 10mpg or more if possible. The transmission (Cruise-O-Matic) is a 3 speed and I am in 3rd gear already at 35mph. In my mind a 4 speed transmission and lower ratio rear end gears will help to improve mileage. Also, I will be putting a smaller carb on like a 600cfm or so. Anyone have any recommendations on transmission and read end setups or a good carb that will help with gas mileage? Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your replies.

-Nick.

1: No
2: Yes, but its computer controlled. Will not work without a standalone controller
3: Gear selection is relative. In order for someone to recommended something.......it would help to know what your current gear ratio is.

Not trying to be short, but I'm texting this from my cell phone. I'm sure someone else will elaborate later. In the mean time. Find out your gear ratio and get rid of that Carb...

I got the stock setup on my '76 F350 trailer special. 460, C6, 4.10 gears and I am getting abou 8-10. Something isnt right with yours. I think your carb is to big personally.

Yeah I know the carb is ridiculous and that is the majority of the problem. I am going to rebuild the good ol Autolite 4100 that came on it. Pony Carbs claims that it's the best carburetor made in that time period and that the fuel atomization most closely resembles fuel injection.

Sounds like something might be wrong with the vacuum advance unit. You don't need to replace the whole flywheel. The ring gear comes off and can be replaced for dirt cheep.
