I recently bought 1997 7.3 F-350 automatic 4x4. When I am cruising in overdrive at 50-65 MPH and take my foot off the peddle to coast, I can feel what I think is the torque converter disengaging. When I apply some gas, it reengages violently. It is worse when cruise control is engaged. Can anyone shed some light on the subject or point me in the correct direction?
I really can't help much but I did the TC lock mod and if I was in doubt about the TC unlocking I would use my switch and lock, then do what you said. I could also be universal joints.
First off Welcome to FTE!
Now, does it do this at other speeds after the convertor locks aswell or just at those speeds. And how violent are we talking here? Just a slight thud, or wake you up from a comma snap your neck violent?

It feels like I am breaking something. The first time I felt it, I turned the cruise control off and let it coast for a few seconds because I thought I may have done some major damage.
I get the same feeling at all speeds, but it gets progressively worse as the speeds increase. I can minimize the jolt if I am very careful when applying power.
I ran with the U-Joint idea, and did feel a small bit of play when I went under the truck and started to twist and shake the shafts. I'll take care of those as soon as my manual comes in. Are the U-Joints hard to change? I don't have a garage at the moment and would like to avoid starting a major project in the driveway. Also, Can anyone recommend some grease-able replacement U-Joints?
What kind of manual did you get? Where did you get it from?
Is your OD light blinking? Have you tried to have the codes pulled? This information will help us narrow things down a bit. You might try cleaning the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear differential. Unplug it, remove it, wipe it off (no cleaners), reinstall it, reconnect it after checking to make sure the connector is clean and you're done. If there's any doubt about how old the VSS is, replace it. You'll know if it's bad because this will set a code; P0500 (common) if I'm not mistaken and a P0503 can show up, too.
This sounds familiar. That hard jolt may be something broken in the overdrive. I can't recall exactly what part was broken. Keeper or snap ring rings a bell. In my case a rebuild was in order. Is everything good and tight drivetrain wise?
