Mechanic said $100 to change plugs and another $140 for wires. I told him I don't need wires and he said, every Ford he has serviced needed wires at the service interval (60,000 miles).
Is this true? He is a good and honest mechanic (small local shop, not ford) but this sounds too strange. He said he would scope the electrical system and if it doesn't need them, he won't put new ones on but he is virtually certain it will.
I agree, i wouldnt worry about it unless he determines you do need wires. Then i would ask to see the old ones. It would be funny to see what is handed to you.
Just wait and see what happens. Ill bet he either forgot or just wasnt thinking straight.
Not for nothin but this guy sounds like a tool! There are no wires. If was going to replace a specific coil pack, thats different. If he only is going to charge you $100.00 I would do it myself. It sounds too cheap. If he is going to charge you by the hour it wont take him less than 3 hours to do the job. At current shop rates thats more than $100.00 (at least in NY) For $100.00 he will only probably change the front 4 plugs leaving the 4 rear(hard ones) alone. Just my .02.
Yesterday I replaced the plugs in a 5.4 and it took me 45 minutes but the job pays 2.6 hours flat rate
I have replaced quite a few sets so it goes pretty quickly now.
