Talking 66 power steering upgrade

next project power steering! i was considering purchasing one from redhead steering but i dont know which one to buy. they list a bendix gear. is this the one i want? i have read all the posts about steering columns and to be honest im a little confused now. my truck is a 66 f100 2wd. can i really shorten this column and shaft to make it work. also i am planning a 460 c6 swap this summer so i will have to change columns again and would like tilt. will a 79 2wd column work in that situation? thanks for all your input guys as you are always fantastic! good to see you back nd!

I've got a 78-79 tilt in mine. Had to change the u-shaped bracket from an old style column over onto the newer one if I remember right.

I have same truck and used a 77 column and shaft but 66 upper collar for turn signal switch. Only thing I had to do was use brkt from 66 and install on 77 column. I was then able to use the 77 shift rod and all works fine.

All looks stock

D5TZ7228A (replaced D3TZ7228A & C5TZ7228B) .. A/T Shift Collar / Available from Ford.

Fits: 1965/77 F100/350.

The only difference between 1965/72 & 1973/77 is: The pointer is made as part of the collar 1965/72. It's a separate part 1973/77.

It's plastic, comes w/the collar and slides into a rectangular notch in the collar.

Originally, the collar used 1965/72 was the same.

btw: The TSS (C9TZ13341C) is the same: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD / 1966 F100 4WD / 1967/68 F100/350 & 1969 F100/350 before serial number G30,001.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P/S systems:

1966/68 F100/250 2WD and 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001 came with BENDIX P/S (optional).

1969 F100/250 2WD from serial number D96,001 / 1969/78 F350 / 1970/79 F100/250 2WD / 1977 F250 4WD from serial number Y20,001 / 1978/79 F150/250 4WD / 1979 F350 2WD/4WD all came with FORD P/S (optional).

P/S was not available on F350's before serial number D96,001.
------------------------------------------------------------
Big Daddy T: The steering column used with BENDIX P/S in 1966 F100/250 2WD's has a shorter steering column shaft (34 15/16" long-C6TZ3524M) than the one used w/o P/S (35 5/8" long-C5TZ3524H).

This means that if you install BENDIX P/S in your 1966 F100, you will have to change this shaft (obsolete-no one has any).

C6TZ3524M = This shaft is the same: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD w/BENDIX P/S.

Something else to consider. Sooner or later you may need parts for the BENDIX's P/S gearbox. Where will you find them? The seal kit (C6TZ3E500A) has been obsolete for over 20 years.

There are a few available from obsolete parts vendors for about $125.00 each. Other parts for the gearbox will be next to impossible to find.

FORD P/S: The parts are readily available. The same seal kits (there are two-input & sector shafts) fit 1965 and later passenger cars, 1969 and later trucks.

Both are available from Ford for $43.21 for the pair, about $33.00 a pair if bought from an FTE sponsor.

I usually like things left "as original" but in this case I agree with jowilker, banjopicker and garbz2. Forget the awful BENDIX P/S, and install Ford P/S...get it and more from a 1973/79 F100/150 donor.

Yes it will be the same and need to be modified at the mount. Use the stock ford engine and isolators in the 79. They will bolt in to the 66. You may need to drill the 2 back holes in the cross member for the perches. It will also mount to your stock transmission mount moved back a few inches to accommodate the new tail shaft location.
