replacing oil cooler
OK guys I didn't have much time today but I started the prosess of chanding out my oil cooler. I started by draining the colant and flushing for about an hour with just water. Oh and my colant that came out looked really good, just fyi. So my next step will be flushing again with some vc-9. Once that is done I will start the replacement. I will keep you all up to date.
Oh one more thing I pulled the egr valve and it really didn't look wet , it might have had some moisture but not really wet. I don't know hoe to explain it sorry. What do you think????

I mailordered mine but it should be at a Ford dealership.
From an old post talking about where I got stuff:
-from RyderFleetProducts.com $57
--2 gals of Restore (I know it only takes one but I had in mind to try some of that in the cooler backflush)
-from K-MansParts.com $72
--2 qts VC-9 (might should have gotten more at $18/qt, next time.)
--improved FICM plug
--EGR valve gasket set (don't know why... just felt like adding something to the order since I was already paying for shipping)
-from QuikValve $99 (not yet arrived)
--two F-108N's
--an F-111N
--safety clips, 3/8" hoses and a 5/8" hose

I don't recall if you had any coolant loss or any white smoke out the tail pipe or not. If not then I'm not sure I'd spend the money on the EGR cooler. You can take it out and pressure test it to make sure. AFA VC-9 goes you can get that at a Motorcraft dealer, not just a ford dealer or Restore and/or Restore+ which are cheaper alternatives to the VC-9 from a Cummins dealer.

I see no reason not to, especially if it pressure tests good. You are replacing the primary (not only) cause of EGR cooler failure when doing the oil cooler.

If the above statment is true then Id say the EGR Cooler is Fine and you can reuse it. Im not shure how they pressure test the egr cooler but would think you could rig it up cap one end of the Coolant side and blow air into it while its submersed in a tub of water and watch for air bubbles IDK. I would think you could rig it up will a couple plumbing parts and an air compressor
Id say if you havent lost any coolant and no smoke your probably fine a pressure test would confirm
So was the egr valve not wet but gooey this may be from a stuck open thermostat if the truck is running cool you dont get proper combustion and it wet stacks
Oh 1 more thing when you flush pull the thermostat run the VC-9 Id use 2 quarts of VC-9 with water in the cooling system set the truck to high idel like 1100 rpm and let it go for an Hour then get the cleaner out Id pull the driver side Block drain plug the Lower rradiator hose and do some water flushes to get the cleaner out then pull the thermostat again and take a garden hose and stick it in thermostat opening and let it just run water threw with the block while the block drain plug out and lower hose off then do the same to radiator and the Heater core unhook the coolant bottle and unhook the other heater line right by the Alternator make shure the heater is on so it will let the water run threw the heater core when you put the garden hose to it
the cleaner you get it the better your odds you will never have to do another oil cooler

Blade, you hit it right on the head. Its kinda gooey on the inside of egr valve. I'm running at 187 to 190 ect. Maybe I'll throw a new tstat in , oh while I'm talking about the tstat when you say remove it and run the vc-9, your meaning take the tsat out and then bolt the housing back on so I'm not waiting for it to open up right

Yes pull the thermostat and bolt the housing back on then flush with the cleaner
when you flush the cleaner you must keep flushing till water is as clear going in as coming out
Iv done it both ways with or without the thermostat and WITH the thermostat I couldnt get it to flush clear water I bet I ran a dozen water cycles and still came out Dirty water
some folks say you have to get it hot for the VC-9 to work good and leave the thermostat in.
the problem is the thermostat dont open till you hit 190* so your not circulating cleaner till then and still its barly opened at 190 ect
But when I did it with the thermo removed and set to high Idel it really circulates the cleaner. and it gets pretty hot seems like I got up to 150* at high idel just sitting in the drivwAY. And cleaded the system alot cleaner I had clear water after the 4-5th flush. So IMO it cleaned it better

No Problem
The FTE Crew helped me at one point or another just paying it forward
When you get ready to pull that oil cooler make shure the valley of the engine is Clean And have a shop vac to suck up the oil as it comes out pull it up slow
I put the turbo drain back in right before I pulled the Oil cooler this Kept the Junk and trash out of the HPO system
Its must be Clean cant stress enough
Some rush threw it pull the cooler out and all the junk from the Valley of the engine goes right down the Turbo drain only to Plug the Fine IPR Screen and take it out Upon the first startup then they have to dig back in to change the IPR out
