Counterfeit Mercury Hubcaps

Counterfeit Mercury Hubcaps
Of my hubcaps, I have two Mercury and two Ford script. I put the Merc hubcaps on the front of the truck and the Fords on the back. Look as I might, I have not found matching Merc hubcaps come up on e-bay.
To make things better I took a digital photo of one of the Merc hubcaps and printed it at full size. Then I took that print and laid it over some red vinyl tape and cut out the letters. I did this 4 times (once for each hubcap). I applied the vinyl letters onto the Merc hubcaps to spruce them up with fresh colour, and then I did the same to the Ford hubcaps. Now (from a distance) all of the hubcaps match!

I didn't even try to hide the Ford script. I just stuck the Mercury label right over it. If my hubcaps were not so dinged up, it would probably be more obvious. As it is, the script just blends in.
The vinyl material I used is from a sign machine that makes permanent outdoor signs, so I think it will stay put for a while.
I'll take a closer picture and let all of you have a better inspection.
I might do that. The Mercury hubcaps seem to be mild steel that is chrome plated. They show some rust and staining. I think that the Ford hubcaps are "white metal". It probably makes sense to put matching caps on a side.

I had the same question as Julie
Mac's, and a I assume others, sell Mercury hub caps, there are about 2½ times the cost of the Ford caps. I suppose because the demand isn't as high for the Mercs.
Or you could buy a set of these for same price as the Ford caps and add your graphics to them and get the same look as you have now:

Thanks for the input Bob! Eventually I will probably get the smoothies and add my graphics. The good advice I get in this forum is the reason I hang around here.

Many of the Mercury and Ford script and block letter "innie" hubcaps used on trucks will be found on 1940/48 Passenger Cars.
Innie: The hubcap snaps over tabs or riveted clips located inside the center of the wheel.
The Ford script hubcap pictured in Post #1 is 11A-1130-A = 1941 Ford passenger cars.
The most common Ford hubcap seen today (with blue FORD block lettering) is 6A-1130-A, originally used on late 1947 and 1948 Ford passenger cars, 1948/52 F1's.
1953/56 F100's used a similar hubcap, but the FORD letters were painted red.
Originally this cap was BAAA-1130-A. Ford later replaced the part numbers prefix with B3C. In the late 1950's, Ford obsoleted this hubcap, replaced it with 6A-1130-A.
btw: If you see any (so-called) Ford hubcaps spelled FOOD, FO0D, FURD, FORO, FDRO or similar...these are JC Whitney, Sears and Western Auto replacements.

Yes those Mercury hubcaps are getting very hard to find. And the prices asked for the junky ones are just crazy. I"ve seen the smooth caps with the graphics on them and they are hard to tell from real ones until you get right down to look at them.
If I come across some, I'll pick them up for you. The swapmeet season is almost here and you never know.

There were a set of Fool hubcaps on eBay a few years back. The company started with "Fool" with the Ford type script and then later changed them to "Bool" with the F morphing into a B. I have a picture of them but it's on my shop computer.

When you see the truck as a whole, you don't even notice the Ford script.

That's pretty cool, Jim!
I'm kinda fond of these...
...but I'm not sure what year they're from, or where to find them.
Bob, I didn't see the Merc caps you mentioned in Mac's online catalog. Do you have another reference? A real live and in person catalog, perhaps, or do I just have the wrong website?

I took them off...threw them away, replaced them with Baby Moons. Before y'all say anything...this was back in 1959...before I knew better.
