The wife broke my truck...

I don't know if I can really blame her (but I will). She told me that when she started our 93 Ranger 4.0, with 150,000 miles of pretty trouble free running, this morning, she heard a "bang" sound, then the engine revved up, so she shut it down. She described the sound as more of a metalic noise, not a backfire through the intake (but she doesn't really know the difference).

I checked the engine compartment but didn't find the neighbor's cat or any engine parts where they shouldn't be. The truck fired right up, but revved up to around 3000 rpm, then slowly dropped and died. Started again at high revs, but ran rough as rpms dropped. Could be kept running by tapping gas, but would jump up to 3000 on each tap. No clanking or knocking sounds from the block (thank god).

It was raining too hard to screw with right now, gonna try again tommorow. Kinda thinking that it may have backfired through the intake and messed up the air flap. Any other suggestions to look for, to save time while standing in the rain?

This is a strange one. I would start by checking for proper functioning of the throttle body. Make sure the throttle blade is there, and is not bent. Make sure it seats tight. I'm not sure how a fuel injected vehicle could possibly backfire, but thats what it sounds like. I also know to check the idle air control, but have never had to. Maybe someone else could help him out here?
