what to look for in a 6.0

I do some volunteering for the local high school music boosters. Last season they blew up the old chebby 350, they found 2 PSD's, a 2004 and a 2005. One has under 100,000 miles and one has a little over 100,000 miles. They want me to look at them and test drive them tonight. What should I look for and do while driving them? We pull a 30 foot enclosed fifth wheel loaded with band chit. I believe they said the price was 20,000 to 25,000 respectively. I was pushing for an older 7.3 but they want newer!

You'd be better off asking this in the 6.0 forum. You KNOW we're going to recommend the 7.3 for its proven reliability. They could save $10,000 AND get a more reliable vehicle IMO, but, it is what it is.

I do know that the '06 & '07 models were the least problematic of the 6.0 line, but tell them this: I've spent a good amount of time out with horse & cattle people, and those that have 6.0s with over 100k wish they still had their 200k+ 7.3s back. A guy I'm getting parts from drives an '05 CC LB 6.0 and has had more trouble in the past 8 months from it than he ever did with his '00 7.3 CC LB dually. His son drives an '01 CC LB 7.3 and wife drives an '01 7.3 Excursion.

The 2005 has some mods to it the 2004 does not. If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely pic the '05. That said, you'll still likely run into EGR issues on that thing. Best bet is to get rid of it, since I'm sure it's out of warranty now anyway (or close to it).

Joe I would be very surprised if you could talk a local school district into violating EPA regs by removing the EGR.

Oh well yeah... True. LOL! Didn't think about the school running the trucks in their fleet...

Thinking about it, it would be not much different than running a 7.3L. No wonder the tree huggers hate us.
