Just dies randomly when a/c is on.

My buddy has a 2001 f-450 with the 7.3L engine . He says it just started dieing on him out of the blue , and it seems to happen just when the a/c is on . "weird" I dont understand that one any ideas? I told him to run it with a/c off for the rest of the day to make sure than call me back. Just thought i would check and see if anyones ever heard of this on here.

That's a new one on me too. Does he get a CEL? How does it die? Cough and sputter, or like someone turned the key off?

I dealt with a similar thing last summer and never got a definite answer. The electrical plug to the compressor housing can get old and sometimes needs replacing, for me I think it was a set of chafed gauge wires. I felt mine was motivated by heat. Interested to see what you find.

If the light comes on, there's a code stored. Not all code readers work with these engines, but knowing the codes would sure help.

OK I was able to go drive this truck myself today. Heres whats really going on (nothing to do with a/c ) as i was driving down the freeway at 70 mph and at operating temp. all of a sudden service engine soon light comes on and it starts cutting out bad and starts smoking ( blueish white smoke ) than as quick as it started it stops than a little bit later it does it again. As long as i keep the rpms up it comes out of it but as soon as they drop and my speed decreases it dies. So im setting beside the road now and it wont start , it trys but just dies right away, i waited about 15 to 20 mins so it had time to cool off a little than i cranked it over ,started right up so i headed t the nearest auto zone to get the codes read ,will there were no codes even with the service engine soon light on , go figure. I also noticed that while i was cranking the rpm gauge didnt move all the time when it did it would try to start. After it sets until cool it will start fine and run fine until it gets to operating temp. than the problems start showing up again. Could this be a cps or crps . I always thought when they went bad they were bad thats it ? Why isnt there a stored code . this one got me scracthin my head.

If the tach is not moving when cranking the motor on a 2001 model, go to Ford and buy a CPS. The CPS from autozone, napa, and all the other parts stores don't work well. You need one from Ford or International.

ok i got the truck in the shop unplugged the CPS and it was all oilie up inside connector ,so i called ford and got a new CPS #f7tz-12k073-b $22.10 that was cheap comparred to what i,ve been reading on here about what they cost (i didn,t argue ) . I cleaned oil out of male side of connector , installed CPS and test drove it around Denver for 2 hours with no problems. You guys are awsome thanks for all the help. Still wonder why the sensor was so cheap .
