need some advice on a 96

I got a 96 F150 with a 4.9 300c 6 cylinder. what can i do to get some more horsepower. I thought about maybe headers and a good cold air intake. but what other simple solutions can i do to get some more speed and maybe some more pulling power. the low gears are stout as hell on these trucks but 4th and 5th highway gears are weak. Help me out guys.

Swap in a 302, or even better, a 351. All kidding aside, every 300 I have drove has been a real dog on the highway, they just don't produce the midrange and highend grunt of a V8. Whatever you do to it (besides spending a lot of money to turbo it) is not going to get you what you want.

Don't get me wrong the 300 is a great motor, but if you are looking to haul ***, it will never be the equal of a V8. If you want to get some more power, headers and a full free flowing exhaust are a good idea. Forget the cold air kits, they are garbage. With a drop in filter, the factory airbox is capable of sucking more air than a mild to moderately built 300 is ever going to need. Next get a cam, I'm not sure what is available for the 300, but I know there isn't much. Hopefully some 300 expert will chime in.

Good luck with your 300 and welcome to FTE.

Check the axle gearing, if it's anything other than 3.55 change that first.
