I am working on a 1991 F-SuperDuty Dump truck with a big block 460 and the E9ta-7003-XA 5 speed Wide Ratio Transmission. I have done a lot of work to the body and engine and would like to change the transmission fluid before I start using the truck. Everything runs well and I have experienced no issues. I found some data on-line that suggests putting Mercon XT-2 QDX oil in the trans and the capacity is .12 liters. Is this not automatic transmission fluid? Additionally, is it a good idea to change the fluid or should I leave well enough alone? Does anyone have any suggestions?

 

The fluid specification is correct - Mercon ATF in the ZF 5-speed. Changing the fluid shouldn't cause any problems, and would probably be a good idea if its condition is unknown. It should take somewhere between 3 and 4 quarts.

 

I noticed two plugs on the transmission, one on the side and the other on the bottom. Do you fill it until the oil level is even with the side plug?

 

That's it exactly. There's a magnet just rearward of the drain plug you can try to wipe off with your finger while you have the plug out.
