It might be overkill and probably was, look at how long the cables lasted before being replaced. On my first one I ran one 4D battery instead of two small ones and a large cable made out of a welding lead, that starter lasted the life of the rig 3 or 4 times the life of any other pickup I've owned. So as far as I am concerned their is a benifit to the larger cables.
