after having many ford engines under my right foot it all comes down to 2 things when picking a engine for a 4500lb truck.
1.cash on hand.
2.what you think is cool
there is not many engines that ford put in trucks with under 300ft lbs of torque hp went from 150-325 so you can pick any v8 you wish(if the tq is already there its easy to tap into the missing hp numbers).
now the real importent question is this!
what transmission and rear axle ratio do i need to run this engine effectively for*enter intended usage here*?

for lack of better terms big block or small block (Ya I know those are chebby terms).
351w are also more plentiful if you end up popping it. (most of the 80's some of the 90's in in f-series - bronco's - vans)
351m can be turned back into a 400 if so desired.
I think you might be able to find EFI for the 351w where as you would have to either hunt for aftermarket 351m EFI or rig somthing up. Of course that is if you wanted to go that route. I also think 79 is the last year for the 351m.
The 2 motors require differant motor mounts and trannies so once you pick it you'r kinda stuck. Unless you don't mind another project to swap it over.

or find a 7.3L diesel. How bout that new 6.3L turbo diesel.
Or if RPM's are a problem how bout a rotery motor. I don't think the red line is untill somewhere near 10K RPMs
