Co-creator of Mustang passes away
Donald Frey, co-creator of the Mustang passed away.
I still recall when the Mustang first came out...April, 1964. I was 14 years old, riding my J.C. Higgins bicycle down the collector street, next the street where my family lived....when I saw my first Mustang.
It was a white convertible with a 4 speed std. and the V8 option, which back when they first came out was a 260 cube V8...164 hp if I recall.
Boy was I impressed...4 speed, V8, buckets, convertible...not very big.
The introduction of the Mustang was a huge deal back then and not just among the gearheads of the day.
The introductory sales were off the chart...just about everybody wanted one...except my parents who needed a full size station wagon to lug the family around and tow a trailer.
I think unless you were alive back then it's hard to fathom the impact the intro of the Mustang had on society.
Cars back in the '60's, changed their look every couple of years, sometimes every year.
You could get all sorts of high performance V8's in every domestic...even the ramblers in the late '60's
They were heady times...

I`m saddened to hear this, I`m very familiar with the Frey name as was often mentioned in many Mustang articles through out the years and rightly so. Too bad he left Ford afew years after Mustang became a reality.
Amazing that he brought Mustang to life with basically no real budget by piggybacking from other Ford programs such the Falcon and Fairlane.

Chevy followed suit, basing the Camaro on Chevy Nova parts...why not...it worked for Ford and GM followed Ford's winning formula.
