My 89 Ranger Started to eat oil last week so i replaced the valve seal guides thinking that was to problem. It dosent leak it it burns it only in the number 1 cylinder. It was gonin through 1 quart a day and after the seals were put on its down to 1/3 a day. Not drinking any antifreeze and all the other plugs look brand new. If the rpm get up above 3 grand you can barely see it smoke. Rings or could it be something else like a head or the intake leak?

 

Sounds like it might be a broken ring on that cylinder. Have you done a compression test?

 

All the cylinders are reading around 120 except cylinder 1 and it was 90. Thats the one burning the oil. It just started eating the oil all of a suddent havent been hard or it or nothing like that. Im stumped?

 

Sounds like a stuck or broken ring.

Also, how are you doing your compression test? Are you doing it with the throttle wide open, and all the sparkplugs out? 120 just sounds real low to me, my 2.9 with 146k tests at around 160 PSI all 6 cylinders.
