95 F-150 speedometer just stopped working

My speedometer stopped suddenly when I was moving a couple trailers around. It smelled like I was burning the clutch. I was advised to change the VSS which I did and got no results the speedometer still sits lifeless at 0 mph any suggestions would be much appreciated

It could be the PSOM. I would check to see if there is a bad connection at the VSS.

The speedometer gets its signal from the VSS. So either there is a wiring problem with the VSS or the speedometer itself. Whoever told you to replace the VSS hasn't worked on Fords much.

Is your ABS light on? If it is, then I would look at sensor wiring. If not then your PSOM is bad. This is the speedometer head inside the dash. I would go to the junkyard and buy a gauge cluster. You need one from a 1994 or 1995 F-series or Bronco. Don't get one from any other year even though they look the same. They are wired differently. This is a great time to get one with a tach if you don't already have one.

Could also be the ABS module on the passenger side of the dash.
Could you tell where the smell was coming from, if it was on the passenger side then I would say ABS Module, if drivers side then PSOM module.

The PSOM:

The Odometer is fed by a ribbon cable that plugs into the white connector at the bottom of the PSOM in the photo above.
The Speedometer head is fed by four prongs that plug into the center of the PSOM in the photo above and are shown sticking out in the photo below

Question where do i start?

So what should I just replace or have tested and in what order? I have the feeling I'm gonna be back in the scrap yard soon enough. By the way thanks for your insight. You seem very well versed on this subject.

You have not said anything about the Transmission hard shifting if it is an automatic. Does it?
You also have not said anything about the RABS amber light being on in the cluster. Is it on?

If it is not on go after the PSOM, you will have to buy the whole cluster to get it. But if you do not have a tach you might try to pick one up with that in it also. If you already have a tach then you can get a cheap cluster with on tach and just use the PSOM out of it. I would use the Speedometer head and Odometer also just in case one of them did the PSOM in.

If the RABS light is on then I would get a RABS module from the salvage yard and replace it instead of the PSOM. This takes for granted the the wiring from the RABS modul to the rear end is OK and the VSS sensor is OK along with its tone ring.

check on top of trans ....there is a little module that I believe is held in place with a bolt....this module goes bad quite often on Fords.....replace it...it has a plug in on one end and pushes into trans on other and held with bolt. This normally fixes prob......good luck.

Please post the solution, if you find it! I've been having the same problem, except my odometer also does not work and the OD light blinks on the shifter ****.

The module on top of the tranny is that on a manual or an auto. Mine is a manual and I don't see it. Also other guy my odometer isn't working either but again my tranny is a manual so no OD flashing

Your 95 does not have what he was talking about, he was talking about something older than a 1992.

You still have not said anything about the RABS light on the cluster, is it on?
