I searched around but couldn't find exactly what I have going on here, I have a 92 F150 4x4 5.8l that makes a weird pop randomly when applying the brakes. It does it as im coming to a stop, ill apply the brake, and while holding it slowing down, there is an audible pop, then I feel the pedal kick, it will give slightly, maybe 1/2 an inch towards the floor, then resume its normal pressure, during all this though the braking never gives, ie there is no loss in braking power or anything... what could this be? I checked the tranny and engine mounts as I read that it causes something similar, but that was not it, and I don't think it would cause the brake pedal it self to kick back, and then give... hope that is clear enough, any questions please ask, and any help is greatly appreciated!
Can you tell if the sound is from the front or rear? In a similar situation I found my rear brakes were sticking and out of adjustment. New shoes, a hardware kit and liberal anti seize fixed mine.
If from the front....could be many things. Sticking caliper maybe? Wouldn't hurt to check your ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings etc.
I'm about 95% positive its in the front, but no I have not had a chance yet to tear into the brakes yet - between weather and work its been a pain, was hoping to get some ideas flowing so the day I do get a chance to rip into it all, I can hit as many points as possible! Thanks for the input, hopefully ill get a nice day here soon!
Finally got to take everything off and inspect the whole region, everything seems in good order, rotors are in good shape, brake pads are good, the calipers seem a little worn but nothing more then what I would expect on a 18 year old truck... there is no rogue fluid around to suggest a blow out... I am going to replace the brake pads next weekend though just for good measure, going to go ahead and price out new calipers while im out...
i have a rondom popping noise on mine. my mechanic friend (who also drives a 150) said that there is a mounting bracket on the back of the tranny, even if the bolts are tight, take them off and put lock nuts on them. if that is the issue with your truck, the fix is only 76 cents
just a suggestion before you spend hundreds on brake parts
