I need to replace the tires on my 1997 F-250 HD Crew 4x4.
I have 315x75x16 BFG AT and Weld Super singles. I'm tired of fixing leaks in the rims and want to replace them as well (single piece this time). I only "plan" on keeping the truck another couple of years and so don't want to spend a bunch. So... I have a few questions.
Oh yeah... I put a Dana 60 up front some time ago.
1) Any andvantage in going with a 17" rim? (Brake cooling/clearance)
2) To save money on tire and rims I am considering Toyo, Pro Comp, Hankook, and Kuhmo and American Racing, Procomp rims.
Should I stay away from any of them? Other reccomendations?
American Racing rims are not that cheap (depending on what style you are looking at).
I am not a big fan of Toyo or Kumho personally, but I'm sure others will buy nothing else. Most of the larger name brand tires are only made by a few companies (i.e. BF Goodrich is made by Michelin, etc.) so a lot comes down to budget, preference and looks.
As for wheels, I had a hard time finding a wheel that I liked. I don't know what your taste is or what style you are looking for, but I'm more old school. I wanted a simple Alcoa-style polished wheel with 7 or 8 holes in it. The American Racing ones were way too expensive (and a low load rating), as were the Mickey Thompsons. After all my searching I ended up with these...
Ditto. For trucks that are used (hauling loads or off-roading), I like the smallest diameter that will fit over the brakes.
IMHO: Big blingy wheels are for those that put flash or trendiness before function. You know, for those who feel a need to buy a different image. And they scream "I'M COMPENSATING FOR A PRIVATE SHORTCOMING!!!!!!!"

Really... I'm talking maybe a 17" from a 16". Again, I thought I had an issue with the brakes on my old D60 up front and clearance with my Weld 16s... and I'm guessing not all 16s were created equal (ie different inner diameter).
My thoughts were...
17s would ensure no brake interference problems and maybe help a little for cooling.

What function would I be giving up going to a 17?

There's nothing wrong with 17" wheels. Take a look at the available tire sizes in 17" versus 16". For example, the Nitto Terra Grappler has 8 options for 16" wheels but 13 options for 17" wheels. If I were buying new wheels, I would opt for the 17" wheels over the 16" wheels. See link below for details.
check tirerack.com for wheels too. they had several 17" wheels for under $100 not long ago. I have the same truck, getting ready to do the Dana 60 swap myself. I'm going from 16.5 to 18's, as I can get them in a trade for cheap. Check craigslist in your area. There are lots of people wanting to sell 17 or 18's to go to 20's or 22's.
Thanks for the post. I like those rims... the ARs I am looking at are very similar but about 160 ea.
What about size (17s)???? Advantage???
I vaguely remember some clearance issue with my 16s and the D60
Also... I didn't realize how close in cost Toyo's, Pro Comps, and others were to BFG?????

No Problem. I kept mine at 16" and went 8" wide (compared to the stock 7" wide). I stayed at 16" because I had a larger choice in the tire size I was looking at (plus the 16" tires were cheaper for the most part too).
I got the Ultra Type 164s for $125 each. The only place I could get them was at tirerack.com, so Discount Tire bought them and gave them to me for that price (Ultra said I had to backorder them and it would take 45 days). I got my BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM2s for $230/tire.
All in all I moved up to 16x8" rims (3400lb rating), 285/75-16 E-rated tires (3750lbs @ 80psi) and have been very happy. The wheels have a 5mm offset (the nearest I could turn up during my research is that the OEM offset is 5.38mm) and the tires (effectively 33x11.50") clear the leafs with no problem. When I turn the tires, they B-A-R-E-L-Y clear the fender liner, but they do clear. I've taken the truck out and done some 'wheelin and have absolutely no rubbing issues when articulating or at full lock.

Are these the ones your looking at?
I have this style (Mojave) in chrome on my truck, simple but elegant. I also have the Toyo AT's on them, very nice riding tire and they wear very well.
Smotrs, Yep, that's the rim. What front end do you have?
I would prefer to stay with the 16s for the reasons brian mentioned but want to make sure I have no clearance issues. Again, I have an old D60 up front (king pin) and want to make sure the brakes clear.
I'm going back 10 years but I thought I remembered a problem with my 16" Weld's and the front brakes all though I can't for the life of me remember what I did (or could have done) about it.
Sorry... just saw in your profile you are running on 18s. I'm guessing plenty of room.

Reason: update
Sorry can't help you with the fitting issue. I can tell you that it's a very nice wheel. Are you thinking chrome, polished or black like I posted? I went with the chrome as they are really easy to keep clean, brake dust and road grime just washes right off.
Hopefully someone can give you better answers regarding the fit.
I wanted to try the black (teflon) but I saw another one (different manufacturer) yesterday at a local 4x4 shop and it had a few chips off it and that was just at the shop. It makes me nervous how it would do on the road.
It just depends on the wheel. If they are simply painted, then chipping and scratching could occur pretty easily. The more expensive should be powdercoated, which would hold up better.
