What's causing this clutch problem: '96 2.3L

I just bought this 1996 Ranger with 55,000 miles. The clutch doesn't hook up until the pedal is almost fully released but thats ok since it doesn't slip when it's engaged. Then today I stated having problems. Sometimes the clutch hooked up very abruptly when the pedal was almost fully released so as to stall the engine and chirp the tires. Other times I couldn't press the clutch pedal down, it felt like there was a tennis ball between the pedal and the floor. Once I couldn't start the truck because I couldn't press the clutch in! I had to override the clutch switch to start it. Then I could press in the pedal. What could be the cause of these problems? They only happen when the truck is stationary. When moving there is no problem.

Sounds to me that it could be slave cylinder binding on the throw out bearing or pressure plate. How does the clutch pedal feel with out the engine running? It it soft or firm? Also check your fluid level on your clutch Master cylinder Reservoir and keep us updated please

There is a plug on the side of the tranny take it out and look in there while somebody push the clutch and see what is happening. it can be anything from low fluid to a busted pressure plate.

A few days ago I topped up the clutch fluid, only took a couple tablespoons worth. I have driven 300 miles testing it out and so far that seems to have solved the problem.
