Thats how fickle black powder can be Rob. We train to wait at least a minute before repriming a flintlock in my group. And to always say misfire so we know to not go near the muzzle until it is clear.

And too much humidity can make it misfire. or not even flash the pan.

i would sure like to have two humidity controlled safes, one for firearms & ammo and one for guitars! low humidity cracks the finish on guitars

I dont worry too much about humidity in my house. Especially since my muskets dont fit in a safe. They are too long. Only time I worry about humidity is when I am at an event or at the range. And if it is raining all of my black powder stuff stays at home because wet powder doesnt do anything.

I know what you mean. I keep all of my weapons clean. Hardest ones to keep clean are the flintlocks. Can only take those apart so much to clean them. I have to keep them well oiled and every so often polish the rust off the barrels because they will rust no matter what. For my flintlocks I usually use 3 in 1 oil which works very well. I use rem oil for my modern stuff. I have used bacon grease at an event before because we ran out of oil.

I never messed with Rock-locks, just percussion muzzle loaders. Humidity doesn't seem to bother black powder too much or the caps. I have a Navy .36 cal pistol that I load up and seal the business ends of the cylinder with candle wax. They always go "bang", even a couple years later. I don't take any particular care except to keep it out of the rain. Black powder only, none of that foo-foo substitute crap.

I dont use any of the substitute crap either Tedster. Only traditional black powder. I got into flintlocks because of my hobby as a reenactor. Flintlocks dont like high humidity and of course they really dont like rain, snow, sleet or hail.I have 3 flint locks and one percussion cap revolver. The revolver is my smallest caliber blackpowder weapon at .44 caliber. Everything else is larger.

Hello From The DFW Area

Thanks for the June eye candy ! I have a question for anyone owning a pre 70 Ford truck. Are they missions exempt?
