Oil Change at Home - Where to Buy? Oil Disposal?

Fellas -

This is my first diesel. Like to do my own basic maintenance, but what about changing oil at home? I need something like 5 gallons of oil, don't I? When I see 5 gallons of Rotella at AutoZone it seems pretty expensive. When you add in a filter and having to catch and having to dispose of 5 gallons of oil, it just seems to make more sense to me to have it done at one of the quickie places.

However, I hate to let these places change my oil, so any tips on where to get oil, what to use, what the good oil filter is, what else do I need to check when I'm under there (I'll hit the grease fittings, of course)? Also, what are you using to catch your oil when it drains? Wish I had a oil burning heater in my garage, but I don't, so I guess I can dispose of it at the nearby parts place.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Scott

You can usually find a good deal at Walmart, or if you have a Tractor Supply Co. near by. It takes 15 quarts, so you'll need 4 gallons of oil, a new oil drain pan if your existing one doesn't hold 15 quarts, and a very large oil filter wrench.

I prefer the Motorcraft FL 1995 oil filter. Walmart sells them for $10, and I've used them for almost all the miles on my truck. Just about any place that sells oil will usually take the old oil back. When changing my oil, I like to unscrew the filter just a little to make sure it's not stuck, then poke a hole in the bottom of the old filter to let it drain. The good news is your standard 15 qt drain pan will sit under both the filter and oil pan so you can drain them both at the same time.

Don't make a habit of this or you'll end up buying 8 new injectors.

X2 what Chris said in both his posts. In addition I like to pre-fill new oil filter before install.

Scott get you one of these if you dont have one yet. You can get it from RiffRaff.

then save the first 4 empty gallon bottles they fit right under the drain on my truck. I use a large paper bag under the bottles to catch the 5 or six drops of oil that dont get in the bottle. I went to our local donut shop and asked for a 3 gallon bucket that "filling" comes in. Place that under the filter punch the hole to drain then spin off and drop into the bucket. No fuss no muss. Then save your new empties for next time.

x2 on the futmoto.. usually autozone and O'Reillys will price match wal-mart's price on Rotella. It's $11.50 a gallon IIRC..

I guess that's my next question - how often are y'all changing your oil? I'm doing it every 5,000 miles. Is that about right?

Thanks,

Scott

I usually buy Rotella 15-40 at Wal-mart or TSC which ever is cheaper. Speaking of which I found 2.5 gallon at Wal-mart for 25.50 I think it was. Not a bad price. Was using the Motorcraft filter from Wal-mart as well but this talst time switched to Wix. Usually use the waste oil on the farm, coating wood hay wagon racks. or give to a friend with a waste oil heater in his shop. I use a regular 5 gallon pail for a drain pan, fits perfect and doesn't over flow. Pre-fill filter was well.

Thats a great idea Joe, could even make a few bucks in the process for the next oil change. I currently take my used oil up to a shop that burns the oil to heat, they're more than happy to take it off my hands.

Some of us have enough hand & wrist strength to torque the filter on and off without the use of a tool....They're only supposed to be hand-tightened anyway......

j/k, Chris.....

I just like to poke the old 7.3L dinosaurs here now and again.....
