F350 Automatic Transmission Question

My Dad has a 02 F350 Dually 4x4 Powerstoke with an automatic tranny. He tows a 37ft fifth wheel trailer and is looking to install a transmission kit becuase he is used to driving a standard and doesn't like the feel of the auto. He has a engine chip already installed and doesn't know which type of Tranny upgrade to do.

He is a mechanic so is able to do a complete kit with the springs and valves. But is also looking at 2 types of plug-in style, one that is a constant lock up type, and one that is a variable lock in type.

He is getting different stories on which is better and I am looking for some info to help him with.

He typically tows in the spring/summer/fall and is usually around PA which has its share of big hills to pull.
