Today I started the swap

My early 99 powerstroke lived a relatively short life, under 150k. spent many dollars and hours trying to figure how why my MPGs where so low and the motor noise so high. Found low compression to the main issue. Ordered up a rebuilt long block on Ebay from a company called Tidewater machine. Received it on Friday. Couldn't beat the price, I hope I can't beat the quality, only time will tell.

I am going to use this thread to document my progress and ask questions. Hopefully anybody that done a 7.3 motor swap that has any tips will toss them in here. If anybody has any links to other write-ups I would be glad to see them.

During this project I am converting my motor over to a 2002 setup. I have the turbo, IDM, ECM and related parts. Also ordered up the correct downpipe. I also will be installing the CPR kit for the fuel system. Its going to be a real pain to diagnose any issues if this doesn't start since I will be putting in so many different parts.

Today I started pulling the front of the truck apart. Ran into the first snag. How do you get the fan clutch off. I can't find a way to bind the water pump. Not a lot of room and the belt won't hold it in place. I assume is threaded standard, counter-clockwise is off.

Photos will be added as I go. http://picasaweb.google.com/stemo76/EngineSwap#

The fan can be a little trying without the correct tools but very doable
I didn't have the correct tools clos by so had to improvise. The fan nut is 1 7/8"
I used a C-clamp to clamp the belt to the pulley so it couldn't spin easy, then put a 12" pipe wrench on the fan nut.Held pressure on the wrench and hit the wrench with a 3 lb hammer (the shock is the most important part of breaking it loose).About 3 whops with the hammer and it broke loose
Once it moves a little it will spin right off
Yes it is right hand thread, counter clockwise to remove

Exactly how I did mine when I had to replace the water pump.

i dont think the 02 PCM you got will work in a 99 truck..it needs to be early 01 and down..here is a list of PCM's that work in our trucks..check and see if the codes on your pcm match any of these..i hope the rebuild kit you have has felpro gaskets and Mahle Pistons ..

Here's what you need for the fan removal you can get it as a loaner tool at auto zoneAutoZone.com | Fan Clutch Wrench | 5 pcs. fan clutch wrench set
Make sure you get this and not the 2 piece set (the 2 piece set is to small ) get yourself a stout engine stand , if the engine doesn't come with it get yourself the good sealant from IH for your oil pan .

Thanks for the tips on the fan clutch. I will give it a try next time I get to work on it. I have a huge cresent wrench from harbor freight that fits the nut and gives me a lot of leverage. Autozones tool rental program is great. Atleast in my area you can buy the tool and return it within 90 days with no penalty. And in my experiance they are good quality tools. I am tempted to get a couple of the ones I would use commonly and just exchange them every quarter.

I will look into the PCM issue. I have a custom chip from powerhungry so I expect to have to go back to him and get some tweaking done.

Some quick hits on the wrench made quick work out of the fan clutch, thanks. Got some more parts removed, getting closer to hooking up the engine hoist.

Is it going to be possible to put the motor back in with the turbo already on? I would like to be able to hook up all the exhaust behind the engine before it goes back in but it looks like I won't have any room to work the motor up and down with the turbo on.

Also anybody know how I can look up factory for part numbers. I need a new radiator overflow but can't find it on the online parts catalogs. I also need one boot from the intake spider to the intake plenum.

My local dealer is so over priced its terrible. So I buy as much as I can through discount online ford dealers.

So far things are going pretty easy. should be able to put in a couple hours a day Monday and Tuesday and then pull it out on Wednesday.

Added a couple more pictures

You can give Clay at Riff-Raff Diesel. He can get You a lot of those parts at a good price. He is also a great person to do business with. He is a sponsor here on FTE. Good luck with the build

Called clay and ordered up the parts I need. Got new plenums and the inserts with new boots and clamps. Also got the Ford RTV and new radiator overflow. Glad he is in Oregon, should have the parts in just a couple of days.

If all goes well today I will have the motor out and start swapping parts to the new engine.

I talked to Tidewater on the phone about 2 months ago, my next motor will be coming from him without a doubt...

Your early 99 more then likely suffered damage due to the factory intake system. There was a recall out for years on the E99 intake due to leaks... Dusting on those motors is quite common.

I asked a question in a thread on another site, but never got an answer from Tidewater, so I'm wondering, do you know if he uses stock forged rods in his builds? Or is that an added expense on top of his "base" price?
