anyone have some ideas or tips on pushing out the old crap bushings from the leaf springs and I-Beams. i was thinking using a ball joint press, or a shop press. im restoring my truck and need it done in 2 weeks.
Google home made bushing press - I made one using info off of a Bronco site. I took a fine thread piece of all threat, 1/2 " I think it was, corresponding nuts and heavy washers. I used a socket just shy of the O.D. of the bushing on one end and another socket with an inner diameter a little bigger than the O.D. of the bushing. I tightened the nuts and pushed the bushing with the smaller socket into the bigger one. It worked for the I beam bushings and leaf spring bushings. It finally stripped the threads on the last bushing, then I just man handles it out.
Or you could put the part in a vice. Get a short piece of pipe slightly smaller than the ID of the bushing bore and whack it with a hammer till it comes out. I use that method often.
On smaller ones a hole saw works good to eat the rubber out, and then you can collapse the outer shell and hammer it out. The outer shell gets really stuck, so any method you can use to get the old rubber out of the way will help you get the outer shell out. I have burned the rubber out also, but what a stinky mess.
