Would you switch to Full Synthetic?

I just got a used Excursion with 113,000 miles with a V10. The last owner had it for about 30,000 miles and told me that he used conventional oil.

Would you switch to a full synthetic at this point?

I would say no. I have seen instances where older engines are kept tight and running by sludge and gunk in the engine. When you change with synthetic, the synthetic goes in and cleans the thing out, which causes the engine to start burning oil.

I would go for the synthetic. It will reduce heat and wear in the engine and is as simple as that.

I agree with Pinky Demon. I too have heard that switching to full synthetic on a high mileage engine leads to oil burning and higher oil consumption between changes. I would probably go with a semi synthetic if I was leaning that way.

I would not switch, the synthetics are not worth the extra cost, also when I switched my old F350 with 120000 miles to synthetic it started to leak from the main seals. I switched back and the leaks went away. A good dino oil is equal to the synthetics especialy since most "synthetics" are dino oil too. There is virtualy no difference between the two.

Put some synthetic in and try it out. There are quite a few things that synthetic oils do better than Dino oils that are well documented, not just hearsay.

Well here's one difference I documented. Last winter I put a quart of dino and a quart of synth outside overnight at -20. The next morning the synthetic poured pretty much like water, while the dino was more like silly putty. I now use synthetic in the winter!

Well, I just put Mobil 1 Synthetic in so I am giving it a go. Used a Fram Tough Guard filter.

I highly disagree. A good synthetic oil will by far exceed any conventional out there. *cough* MOBIL 1 *cough*

I agree.
Lots of misinformation here. Synthetics are far superior. It will not cause oil leaks. You wont have engine failure w/dino and is usually good enough.Synthetics just do a better job than dino. Synthetics additive package doesnt break down as fast, has less impurities. I have 220,000+ on mine with synthetics from day one. You can mix dino and synthetic. In the early times of synthetics you were advised not to mix, but this has since went away. But the myth has been kept alive because of heresay. Another myth is break in the engine with dino, then switch to synthetic. Many, many manufacturers use Mobil 1 in their engines straight from the factory. I use Mobil 1 in everything I own except my lawnmower. I forgot to add, I have went 11,12,13,000 miles between oil changes a few times. That is another benefit

You aren't going to hurt your engine by not using a synthetic oil. I think the syn oils help out in either extreme temperatures or hard use. I am currently running the Motorcraft syn blend right now. I have run the Rotella full syn product for about two+ years in both my SD and Exploder and will more than likely go back to that as it's a good oil and relatively inexpensive for a synthetic.

Also seals leaking among other things...semi synth is a great choice.

you can get a synthetic blend of oil from ford, its not fully synthetic but also not fully regular engine oil... works pretty well i would say

Smile synthetic

I bought my 2000 v10 with 112,000 about 3 years ago I immediatley switched to synthetic and have put another 100,000 on it most of the time pulling a 14000 lb trailer or pushing a snow plow. It has always used about a qt every 1000 miles . I hope to get another 100k out of . I am a believer of the synthetic line of bull . I think it works
