It needs a tune up, should get at least 22mpg with a 460.

 

Or 15.38 if you do that pesky math thing.
That's still highly unlikely though.The estimating of "around" the miles and gallons used,really doesn't help you nor anyone here.


This thread is ludicrous lol.There are many good accurate threads about 460 fuel uneconomy where it's easy to see the overall average that one should expect before buying a big block truck is that 8 city/11 hwy for a rough 9-10 MPG overall average is the realistic,real world mpg rating of these trucks.
It's horrible.Extremely expensive.Buy and run one if you need or want one but don't let anyone mislead you that expecting anything more than 10 mpg average should be expected.Some get a bit more but some get less too.
Don't get your hopes up by the very few with 2wd,3.55,od trans trucks driven only empty on the hwy like a car who claim to be pushing low teens.That's not impressive considering you can just do that with a car and get well over 30 lol.Most who have these trucks,use them like trucks and average 9-10 MPG and the only realistic way to make them do better is to walk or ride a bike lol.

Yeah, I don't believe the hype of the great mpg's that diesels get.

A buddy of mine kept telling me he was getting over 25mpg with his 2010 Duramax . But when he actually calculated it, it was more like 13.
At that rate I think it will be cheaper to keep my 460 in the long run.

 

Yeah diesel trucks are expensive to operate too with higher maintenance cost.They're great for commercial work duty.Generally a diesel will get better fuel economy while hauling and towing than a gas engine will of course but there's nothing cheap about owning any of them.

I agree, if you are making money hauling large loads on a daily basis, only then would I consider a diesel to be worth it.

I use my 460 daily for work, but I only max out the payload once a week on average, the rest of the time I'm hauling under 2,000 lbs in the bed, along with the occasional trailer. But since most of my work is local I'm fine with the 10mpg.

 

Yeah.For 10 MPG I can get a lot of work done at once with my specialty use (IDI) diesel F450 with 5:13 gears.




Don't forget the price per gallon of diesel is higher than gas on top of the extra maintenance expenses.The oil companies are gunna get ya to pay either way.


With my all purpose (IDI) diesel truck I get a touch better.



Where if that was a 460 truck it would probably average 7 or 8 in this configuration and use.It's loaded all the time.4wd/dually.Again then the higher price of fuel and extra maintenance.No doubt this one wins over the long run over the 460 truck setup the same way due to using it to haul heavy constantly.Though the savings over the 460 isn't going to be enough to help me retire a whole lot richer or anything lol.

 

I fully understand why you have diesels, with the amount of weight you need to carry on a daily basis. In the end I think it's more about preference, because as you said in the end it's not really a whole lot of difference once you factor in the difference in fuel price and maintenance/repairs.

I love my 460, it pulls everything I throw on it with ease. The big factor for me is that most of the time I can repair my 460 myself when something goes wrong, but I don't know the first thing about diesels....lol

Our 5.8L is usually the one doing the hauling believe it or not. It's not gonna win any races, but it gets the job done.

 

Yeah.Well I have the old school diesels (with aftermarket turbo's to help them get). They're almost just as simple as the old carburetor big blocks.Of which I also have.

Just chiming in.... 10 mpg city is about all you can expect from a 460 V8 in a truck.
