Remembering my 1950 Ford Pick-Up

Back in the mid 70's while living in Carmel Valley CA I bought the truck for 50 bucks. It was white and someone had put a 289 in it with a 3 speed manual tranny. It was not running but all I had to do was replace the starter solenoid. Had that old truck for a few years and sold it to a kid for $300. I remember he called it his Cowboy Cadillac. Sure would like to have that one back.

Yeah, these used to be just cheap old trucks. I bought a '53, 6-cyl F-100 for "$250 or any guns you want to trade", nowadays it would be a $3k truck.

Somehow I managed to hang on to my old truck from my youth (please don't tar-and-feather me, but it's a Chevy). I recently drug it out of the briar's to begin the process of bringing it back to life. The last 20 years have been hard on it...it's got rust in all the usual places. The good news is that parts are readily available.

The photo on the left is not my truck, but looks exactly like my truck after I first restored it in the early 80's. The photo on the right is what it looks like now. :-(

The first truck I drove on a regular basis was a '70 Suburban and I was 17. It was my dad's truck, it was an old delivery truck with heavy duty suspension. My dad didn't like driving it so after work and on the weekends it was mine to drive. And drive it I did. It had a 350 with a four barrel. It could pretty much out run any stock car on the road. It was a tank but it was fast. I got into a little trouble with it. It was sad when my dad sold it.

The first truck I drove was a green 1949 Dodge, the one with nine windows and had a split windshield. My dad taught me to drive that thing when I was about 13 years old, he would let me drive on the section lines of the ranch. I remember that thing had so much play in the steering, it was just back and forth to keep it on the road.

Speaking of dashboards, I've been having fits trying to make my F1 dash usable. When I get done I'll post some photos.

My first truck was a 1949 Chevy, but my boss had a 1948 F1 and I liked it and wanted one bad. I finally got one and probably like it more now than I would have then. His was also red.

this is my first vehicle. a got it in 8th grade. we put a vinyl top on a 55 chevy for a customer and $100 for her. we had it mostly together for my senior prom.

sad to show what she looks like now. well as of a month ago anyways. i pulled the cab off. made new door bottom as it had some rust starting about a 1/4" up. got my new rockers and cab corners. sometimes life gets in the way, good thing old trucks are forgiving. this was our courting vehicle. last driven in '93.

Like Kenny Rogers sang"Life was so much easier 20 years ago". For me, it was more than 45 now.
