462 CID ENGINE BLOCK CASTING NUMBERS:

C6VY-A........1966-68
C6VE-A........1966-68
C6V..............1966-68

462 CYLINDER HEAD CASTING NUMBERS:

C6VE-A....1966-68
C6VE-B.....1966-68
C6VE-D....1966-68
I pulled this from: www.ford-mel-engine.com The MEL Engine Forum 383, 410, 430, 462 cid • View topic - MEL 462 Engine Specifications

Maybe it will help you out.

EDIT: Also you may find some block numbers on the block somewhere. Also read on the history of this unit and it was a good read.

The distributor appears to be from a 1977 and later V8 and was only used w/DuraSpark Electronic Ignition.

There is what appears to be an oil cap on the left valve cover, that didn't occur until 1965 on V8's.

M-E-L's were 1958/67 383/430/462's.

Count the number of valve cover bolt holes per side. I believe MEL's have 6.

I still haven't found the engine code, yesterday I was under the car working on the exhaust but couldn't find any. Could be because the engine is pretty greasy.
But we will keep on looking.

Btw: Here's a pic of the new exhaust.

You may have to remove the starter. Some engines have the number stamped on the block above the where the starter mounts.

Look at the underside pic and the transmission. One piece trans, and look at the top side where you can see the ribbing between the bell part and the main case part. The Lincoln 462 would have had a Cruise-O-Matic, which is a non-integral bell trans with an iron main case. Pics here:

http://ford-mel-engine.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=172

And there is a top view here of a C6 with the ribbing I see in the pics:

IIRC looks like a C6 behind a 460. Count those valve cover bolts....

Thanks guys for helping me out.

I found some pictures on ebay of a mel462 with a C6 trans.
LINCOLN 462 MEL 7.6L V8 ENGINE AND C6 TRANSMISSION 1966 : eBay Motors (item 170454628576 end time Apr-03-10 11:51:35 PDT)

The engine really looks the same as the one in the car. The valve covers are indeed hold by 6 bolts.

I will count the valve cover bolts tommorow and let you all know.

You're getting closer to a postive ID. One other thing, the exhaust manifold on the original pic you posted (3rd one) looks different than the manifold on the C6 pic you just posted....

IMO pray it is a 460....
