SUBFORD Help/Cruise Not Working

THis is a last ditch effort to try and see if someone can help me. I have been told SUBFORD on here knows his stuff so maybe he can chime in. I have a 97 f250 auto 5.8 that I have added cruise to. I got the servo out of a wrecking yard and its all hooked up with the cable nice and tight but not too tight yet cruise wont work. Fuses under hood and in cab are all good. Servo came out of a 95 f150. Horn pad with cruise buttons was off ebay and fits perfect and horn works. I dont know to use or have an ohm meter but am about to take it to a shop as I can not figure out why it wont work. I suppose the servo could be bad but no way for ME to find that out... Any help is appreciated. Oh yeah, my third brake light is working too... Do I still need to do a jumper wire like I would if it were a diesel? Is it expecting a brake switch of some kind and I dont have one since it didnt come with cruise?

GG

There is also an amplifier that goes between the servo and steering wheel controls, do you have this part?

Yeah that's right. I don't think your truck has the redundant brake pressure switch on the master cylinder. You may have to give pin #9 on the servo plug 12 volts. But yeah wait for SUBFORD to chime in and confirm that.

Look on the side of your under hood fuse box for a 2 wire plug snaped into a plastic holder. This is the plug that would normaly plug onto the pressure switch. It's located on the firewall side of the underhood fuse box. The 2 wires from this need to be connected. What I did was I used a spout plug from a junk truck. Same plug. No cutting, hacking, or splicing.

I was told my pin connector was attached to the fender well by the hinge which it was and that I would only need to unplug it from the dummy cap on it and plug it into the servo.... Does this amplifier serve as power to the #9 pin?

Thanks Guys and keep the help coming... I am about to give up on it...

The servo and amplifier are one assembly. And you can power pin #9 by jumping the plug I explained above.

Hope this works for ya.

Thank You Thank You Thank You..... I now have functional cruise control..... Everything works without hesitation including it getting cancelled when I hit the brakes. Now, I am just wondering for ****s and grins if the light in the dash would work and its just missing the bulb? I would imagine the dash plate is the same for all the trucks and they would just leave out the bulb? Hmmmmm might have to pull it and see... Once again thanks to all that helped me through this.. Especially those that emailed me pics etc...

Glad you got it working.
Just saw your post but sound like BigBlueOx told you the ins and outs of the system.

Sorry but I have no idea what bulb you are talking about not working on your dash.

Its all good. I was referring to the instrument light that says "Cruise Control" in the dash. I have an xl truck that didnt come with cruise. My guess is that the dash plate template is the same on all of them and its just a matter of a bulb not being in the socket for the cruise... Not that I need it but just to finish it off so its perfect...

Looking through all the Shop manuals and wiring diagrams for the 1997 F-series I do not see a lamp on the dash or cluster marked "Cruise Control".

By the way the term "Cruise Control" in a GM term and not a Ford one. That operation on a Ford is call "Speed Control".

So if I hear you correctly, while the speed control is engaged, there is no indicator that comes on in the dash saying so? I dont believe I have ever seen a vehicle that didnt had some sort of light or something that alerted the driver the speed control or "cruise" was active...

I do think I have ever seen a vehicle that had a indicator saying the speed control is engaged.
I do not know how you would drive a vehicle and not know it was engaged. So why would you ever need a indicator?

The newer super duties have a light next to the speedometer that looks like a mini speedometer with the needle in a fixed position. our Land Rover has a light that just says "cruise", But try finding the button to turn it on... The image on the button in no way indicates that its for cruise control... Crazy Europeans

As for my 93, or the 95 cluster i have laying around, nether have cruise control indicators.

Very good then... I wont worry about it. I have had 3 toyotas, 2 superdutys, one a 7.3 and the other a 6.0, an Accord, a Dodge P.U. and a Nissan Frontier. All have had some sort of an indicator for the cruise.

The 1999 was the first Superduty to have one.
I do not work on, drive or ride in a non FORD so I would not know about the non Ford's.

But there are no trucks in the scope of this 1987 - 1996 F150 And Larger F-Series Trucks Forum that have one.
