My keeps going from 0 to 6 volts, never stable. I check my ground and that is ok. So I'm thinking it is bad. Could not find what the output should be in any of the manuals I have.
The contacts inside the ICVR open and close to give the 5 volt output. If you are using a digital meter, you won't get a steady reading. You can test you gauges by using 2 D-cell batteries stacked together and 2 pieces of wire. Hook the wires to the batteries and then touch the wires on the terminals for the gauge. It's enough voltage to determine if the gauge works. If the gauge moves the wrong direction, just reverse the wires. If the gauges test good, then the problem lies elsewhere (cvr or sending units).
I grounded the fuel gauge on the send side and it went up to full. I grounded the temp. gauge on the send side and it didn't move, just clicked. So maybe the fuel gauge is ok and the temp is not.
I'll try the batterys. Thanks for the help.

Then probably the guages and the sending units are all okay and the voltage stabilizer is bad and needs to be replaced. The cheapest one I can find is around $30.

1957/86: There were TEN different ICVR's. The differences are in the connectors and how they attach to the back of the cluster.
Because of these differences, and clueless autoparts salesmen, take the old one with you to the parts store so you can match it up.
B9MZ10804C .. ICVR-Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator (Motorcraft GR508) / Obsolete
I had to replace my icvr. I found some plans on this web site to build my own from radio shack. It only cost me 5 bucks. It is just a 5v regulator, capacitor, and a heat sink. here is the thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...tage-unit.html
I have three gauge clusters. I checked all of them with my meter. I ran 12v to the ignition side and test lead to the gauge terminal. They all read 12v.Are they all bad ?
Ford66, I had the same issue recently with my truck. A new VR did the trick for me. I got mine from LMC Truck, and once hooked up, both worked fine. When I tested my temp gauge I couldn't get it to move by any means, but it works fine now. LMC was pretty good about making sure I had the right part as well. So far, my truck is still 100% origional set up.
