Not necessarily 8 inch, most are 7 inch. I've heard of 8 inch wide 16 inch wheels but I think someone was assuming. I bought aftermarket wheels to get 8 inch width b/c I couldn't find factory ones that wide. The offset is about 0, i have seen measured specs from 0 to -6. Which would make backspacing about 3.5 inches. With a 16 inch wheel you can't go any wider than about 4 to 4.5 inches of backspacing because of the steering knuckle, not the springs etc. You won't find any wheels like that anyway b/c of the 8x170 is unique to these trucks. Larger diameter wheel might be able to keep tucked and clear the knuckle.

i'm planning on getting a set of 20x10 or 20x12 aftermarket rims and i was trying to figure out if they are going to work. i'm worried about tire clearance because i'm planning on going to a 37x13.50 or a 38x15.50...so i want to make sure i get a rim that spaces the tire out away from the leaf springs so it doesn't rub.

Yeap! In that thread, I made my back spacing recommendations based on the actual measurements taken by the OP. You may get lucky and find a set of "off the shelf" wheels that will accomodate the 13.5" wide tires. However, you probably will need to order custom wheels to accomodate the 15.5" wide tires.

Hopefully other FTE members will chime in and make recommendations.

12" wide rims should be enough to to fit 15.50 tire. i have a buddy with a dodge that has 36x15.50x18 tires on a 18x10 trim haha. another buddy just ordered 38x15.50x20 tires and is going to use 20x10 rims. the tires will bulge on their set ups i know but if i go with a 20 x12 rim for a 38x15.50 tire i should be fine given i can find one with the least amount of offset so they don't rub or at least too bad.

I agree... 12" wide wheels are preferred with 15.5" wide tires!

well i got to test fit a 38x14.50x20 today on the front and it's not going to fit! i guess i'll have to go with a 36x15.50 next lowest size in the tires i want. anyone running this size tire on a superduty with leaf springs in the front like years 99-2004? i'm still trying to figure out my back spacing needed to clear. don't want to buy and not fit ha

Where is it rubbing? Have you considered Bushwacker "cut-out" fender flares?

they hit the bumper which isn't a problem to cut that and the valance(plastic piece) but if i would hit a bump while turning it would take out the quarter panel by the bottom of the door. there is only like an inch to spare. i don't like the cut out flares. i really don't like the ones that have the fake bolt holes either ha. i like the smooth look.

With 6" of lift, you may be limited to 37X13.5R20 tires... I think that those 15.5" wide tires are going to rub as well.

Cowboyup, I am in the same situation, except I'm year 05+. I'm going to be running a 6'' lift, and I too am trying to figure out all my options. Right now I'm decided on Mickey Thompson MTZ 36x15.5x20s for a tire. I then began searching for 20x12 rims and realized there are not very many! Which sucks...Especially gloss black ones....Here is one that i like very much however I cannot find the backspacing on this wheel!
http://www.mhtwheels.com/wheel.cfm?cat=664

6'' lift running 36x15.5x20...20x12''rim..Would I be able to run this set up with around 3.75-4.75'' backspace?

Sorry not trying to hijack the thread!
