83 7.5l runs rough timing marks make no sense

My 83 f-250 7.5l runs rough and hot at all speeds. When I check the timing, the timing mark jumps all around before and after TDC with no real pattern. What is this telling me? Moving the dist. does affect rpm but I still have no idea of the timing. Curb Idle screw on carb has little or no effect on rpm's

Your dist may be wore out. Take the dist cap off and grab the rotor and push it back and forth to see how much play is in the dist bushings. Also check the little plate down in the bottom under the star wheel. This should be hooked with a arm to the vacuum advance. Make sure it's not flopping around and loose.
