Can't downshift to 2nd

I was coming down a long, steep grade yesterday and noticed that I couldn't downshift to 2nd! Last month the brakes needed replacing and before I got around to it I was gearing down alot to take some pressure off the brakes but now it won't go into 2nd - like the shifter is stuck.

Any ideas?

Will it shift into second (or 1) when stopped?

No, coming out of Park I can only go as far as Drive, even when stopped. I'm really going to need the lower gearing when I come off some of the snowy hills up on the mountain.

Any ideas?

I would inspect all the linkage first. Have someone move the lever while you look for bent or obstructed linkage going to the tranny.

Just did a basic inspection of the linkage and there's nothing obviously obstructing movement. Any other ideas?

I had a similar problem. I found a small pebble was obstructing the gear selector on the transmission housing. The pebble had been there for some time. The connector that is behind the steering wheel inside the cab is held on with two screws. These screws were so loose, one was totally disconnected and the other was partially disconnected. I tightened them both up and the gear selector behaved normally. I would double check under the vehicle, specifically around the transmission housing where the gear selection lever lives. Then I would go under the dash where the connector hides.

Good luck! Al Burgess
