Ford body on a Dodge chassis...
has anyone seen "project: super dually" on 'trucks'? they are putting a late 70's extended cab f-350 body on a dodge frame with a cummins diesel. originally i said, wtf?!? but then again, you don't see alot of builds for 73-79 fords on the powerblock shows or others. i missed the first installment of the project but look forward to seeing the rest...anyone else following this?

Yea, I've been patiently waiting for the 4th episode, and waiting and waiting. Supposedly the reasoning for doing this was to get the steering and suspension from the newer model vehicle but retain the MUCH cooler appearance of the 73-79 dent side. Can't say as I blame them, new trucks do handle a lot better the the old ones. They went with the Dodge because the difference in the wheel base is an inch or less and I saw it when they set the bed on the chassis and it looked pretty good. I was a little surprised when they said they had to set the engine and transmission back about 5 inches though. Guess I'll just have to wait until the next episode comes on.

I am far from a Cummins guy but Ford does use Cummins in their larger trucks, it's not like putting a Chevy motor in a Ford. And sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due.
And look here for more explanation.
fordcummins.com - Increase Horsepower with Ford Cummins Diesel conversion kits
ONLY spend a fraction of the money to put a Ford Cummins Conversion in your existing Ford truck. If you had a gas burning truck, a Cummins diesel engine can increase your fuel economy to around 20 mpg and some times more. This gives you not only big savings in fuel costs but also the renowned diesel performance and reliability found only in the Cummins diesel engine. Your insurance will not go up, and your licensing fees will not increase. Over all you will gain a combination of Reliability, Power, and MPG not seen in a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke, 6.0 Powerstroke, Ford 5.4, Ford V10, or Ford 460.
And to the comment about ruining a 73-79 Ford with a Dodge chassis. I agree with that statement and feel the same way when people want to ruin a 79 Ford with a 97 Ford chassis.

I am a ford guy all the way, but the 12v's are so much simpler and easier to upgrade than a 7.3 is. They are extremely durable, and well built, not to mention how long the company has been around to design and test to know what works and what doesn't. The 7.3 would be my second choice for a diesel, just can't beat a 12v because of how simple and easy they are.

Cummins
This forum has been around and around on this.
Bottom line is that there are some who prefer everything original Ford and others (this is the camp that I fall in) who want the best possible equipment for their truck. In this case, it's the Cummins. (Sorry, but no sane person would ever consider the 7.3 a better engine than a 12v Cummins.) The same line of thought goes into putting a Chevy hydroboost on my 79 ford, or Cadillac brake calipers on a rear disk conversion. Rational people consider performance of the part over blind brand loyalty.
PS. The 7.3 is made by International and is no more Ford than a Cummins.

new here
ok, I am new here and wil probably get flamed for this. I am building a long term dream of mine. I am using my low mileage 73 XLT and putting it on a 79 F250 4x4 frame. Using a 87 4.9 coupled to a 97 4r100 and tcase. Thats all good. FORD.
Now, I am also building a 71 Chevy K20. I am using the 97 Ford Frame, 427 Chevy motor, nv4500 and BW4401 Tcase from a 95 crew cab. I expect the best of both worlds from this truck. Lots of modern stuff on a 71 Chevy.
I also drive a Dodge Dually with a Cummins and it is an awesome motor. Better than my 99 f350 with a 7.3.
Sorry for those this offends. but to each their own.

ok, prius body on a 79 bronco frame! let all of the global warming worshippers praise you as you blow smoke in their face. Im going to use the "no replacement for displacement" argument, and side with the 7.3. The reason that the cummins are lasting longer is that the dodges are driven by girly men that dont floor their truck at every chance like us ford guys (j/k). just to keep things going: All of the dodge guys i have met at construction sites have been the oddballs and outcasts, just plain strange people. Ford guys seem to like to smash things. toyota guys always think that they are better than you, and chevy guys are always high.
