Well....when I am driving at a low speed everything sounds fine. Then at 40-50 m.p.h. a winny sound developes what appears to be from underneath (drive shaft maybe?). Anybody have a guess what it can be and what to do?
Whenever you start to have clunking or whining sounds underneath, at speed, lube all UJs and check all the UJ straps. Then check all the tranmission and transfer case bolts.
This sounds familiar, does the sound get increasingly
louder with incresing rpm? do you hear a loose shaft
noise coming from the trans?it's klunky and is most audible
when steppin on it then lettin of the gas in lower gears.
is it noisy in nuetral?
Does your speedo needle jiggle around?
could be some worn bearings inside the trans... or just not enough fluid,to bad for me I already tried filling my trans
U-joints are a good start. Do you hear a "squeak-squeak-squeak". That is usually a dry u-joint.
If you have a two piece driveshaft, pull the carrier bearing down(just two bolts) and spin it. Does it rumble or feel rough when turning??
I just had a "howling" noise at highway speed. I went thru and found it was a drivers side axle bearing. I put a spare axle in and it's quiet. Of course NOW you can hear the rear end whining slightly . I've got an extra one of those too, so I'll be swappin' when the weather gets warmer...like above 30degrees
Like mentioned, does it stay constant, vary with speed? If it varies with speed I would say it's the rear gears. It will have two degrees of sounds. On ACCEL, or DECEL. Usuallly it is on only one till it gets really bad.
Time to put it on jack stands and run'r and listen underneath to find it.
Thanks guys.....Yeah...I do have the 2 part shaft and it does increase with rpm's....especially at highway speeds! It is not a rumble or a squeak....instead it is just a whinny sound. I will check the U joints and go from there!
