Area Junkyards

I was thinking about it today, and realized that htere were only a few junkyards that I frequent. I used to hang around a lot of them, but over the years they have either been closed down or have downsized. This got me to thinking, maybe we could start listing off some of the better yards and the areas they are in to help each other out.

Forgot the name, but the one that I frequently go to with all my trucks is the one right behind the "Sugarless" place in Greenbrier, Arkansas.
It has an AWESOME selection of not only 80-86, but also a good selection of 73-79. They have everything from extended cabs to SWB and LWB, mostly every type of motor you can imagine. Not many of these trucks left on the road in the area, I guess thats why theirs such a "diamond" mine at that junkyard! I'll drive by it in a couple of days and post the name of it on here.

Well, back in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only one I frequented, due to both price and selection, was Tear-A-Part. They use a flat rate for everything, which their price list is available on their website www.tear-a-part.com

I used to go to the pick & pull, but when they started quoting me prices that I could almost get the part new for, well... Lets just say they lost my business.

As for here in Laramie, both of the J/Y we have around here are much like the pick & pulls. Though they do have pretty good selections, when they start quoting $125 for a door you can get from LMC Truck for $130... It just doesn't work.

The ones I shop at all the time are Harry's U-Pull-It in eastern PA (We Got Used.com)...

It's worth it for me to make the 120 miles trek out to West Hazleton... They have a rediculous amount of '73-96 Ford trucks, and the prices are fantastic. Engines are usually like $110 loaded with everything but the A/C compressor, complete beds are around $80, doors are $23 something, cabs were like $120 IIRC... And if it's just small odds and ends your after, they usually just give it to you free like plugs and connectors... They give you bigger stuff free if you're buying a tone of other stuff too. They really don't care cause they crush it all in a few weeks anyway. The faster the truck is parted, the quicker they shred it... If it looks like that particular isle of vehicles is being cut up and sold they leave it alone (some stuff actually stays there for months).

I've found complete flareside beds, Explorer package trucks, and they usually have at least 2-3 '74-79 Supercabs there. Depressing cause most are in restorable or decent shape, but good to know you can get the quarter windows and stuff.

Every time I go out there, I usually get on the forums and see what people want, and I bring a ton of stuff back and ship it out to them. If you find something good, you gotta act quick... Found a new brake controller in an Explorer once, and by the time I went back to get my tools it was gone. People are always crawling all over in there...

I live in the northern illinois area and am looking for better yards. The only good one I know of is 2 and 92. they have a wide selection of parts and sometimes they have good prices sometimes not. Would be interested in knowing where some other good parts yards are.

They have a few most of the time, but they look like they're there because the truck rotted away from the motor.

Most are carb'd, but the last time I was there, they had two 4.9L EFI trucks. I wanted to pull the exhaust manifolds off but as usual, I didn't have enough time and I had a lot of orders to fill.

I found one 300 truck in the Pennsburg yard, but there was nothing left of it... Head gone, manifolds gone... I forgot how big the cylinders were. ... There was a truck right next to it that shouldn't have been there... Rust free '85... no wheel arch rot, doors and tailgate were perfect, no cab rot. I was really mad about that one; some people just scrap good stuff out of ignorance. There is a lot of good stuff in these yards...

Oh, the last time I was at the big yard, there were like four Broncos, one had a near perfect interior (blue bukets), and next to it was an empty space with a loose top just laying on the ground.

I went to my favorite yard today - AAA Truck to bother them about a Dana 60 they had with my 3.55 ratio. I have bothered them a few times about it, but they kept telling me no one was around to give a firm price on it. I finally got the answer today - $1250. A bit more than I was willing to spend. Still a good yard though!

That got me checking the area, and I found a new, at least to me, yard, E&J Auto Wreckers. They had a bunch of our trucks! I was in heaven! They also had a bunch of Chevys/GMCs which I was checking out! I even found a 1968 Firebird and a clean 1967 Scout!!!!! All current projects (except for the Scout which I wish I did not sell).

I ended up picking up a shell for my truck for $100, but will return for A lot more!

As promised!
Rockford, IL area:

LKQ U-Pull-It - Once upon a time it was fun, but the new manager has taken to straight crushing anything older then 1990, unless deemed "special." Prices are listed in entrance, but they have a habit of changing prices (not for the better) if they feel a part is worth more.

Loves Park Auto - Not a self serve yard. High on their prices. They do have older vehicles, but you have to ask about parts. They WILL NOT let you in their yard. No excuses.

B&H - You or they can pull. The owner does good by repeat customers. Mostly newer vehicles (2000+) but every once in awhile he gets older stuff in.

Bilderback's - About 20 minutes north of Rockford. They can pull or you can (at least I believe so, but I'm on good terms with the owners). A good mix of older and newer vehicles.

Newville Auto Parts - About 45 minutes north of Rockford in Newville, WI. They pull they big stuff, you can pull off some of the smaller items, but you should ask prior. Prices are middle of the road. Nice family owned business who also bleed Ford blue.

Seward's Auto - About 10 minutes down the road from Newville. Take a day and go here for the fun of it. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE amount of older vehicles ranging from the 1920's on up. His prices are not fixed. He is a random number generator. Pet his yard cats and talk to him to sweeten him up for the best deals.

Jack's Auto Ranch - Located in Watertown, WI. 1930's to 1960's vehicles... high prices. He has been know to bill you for anything you mess up while removing parts (break a door panel getting to a window regulator and you now own the panel as well). You WILL NOT be allowed in the yard without boots and pants on. No excuses and for good reason as you'll see once you get in there.

Does anyone know of any good junkyards near Ridgecrest, CA? My buddy is picking a truck up for me there and wanted to check out some of the junk Cali has to offer. Thanks!

Wait, you live in Gainesville?I live a few minutes south in Ocala.Pretty cool man.

In my neck of the woods,we have a few.

Ocala/Belleview,FL

Belleview Auto Salvage-Used to have a ton of our trucks, but he got crush happy, and only has a few left.Usually he gets stuff that's been abandoned or sitting in a backyard for quite some time.Prices are a bit high, and the staff doesn't seem to know what they're doing.I only go there when I can't find something anywhere else.

Big Sun Auto Salvage-Used to have 13 rows of 80-96 trucks, but this owner also got crush happy, and the last time I was there he only had 2 F-Series trucks in the whole yard.Prices are extremely expensive, and once again I wouldn't go there unless I absolutely needed something.

Mark's Auto Parts-I've never personally been here, but I heard they have some old stuff. Not sure about the prices.

Gavin's U-Pull it-Greatest yard i've ever been too.I love this place, and recommend it to everyone living within 30 miles of Ocala. The lady at the front desk is really nice. They have about 6 rows of 80-96 F-Series trucks.Alot of good stuff out here. Not the best for rare interior parts or tachs since alot of the trucks are XL's and Customs, but they still have alot of great stuff.Prices are very reasonable,I got the wheels on the F100 for $40 from this yard.
