So John Deere lawn tractors don't come with any kind of engine warranty? I guess I don't get it why would he sell it for 100 even with a blown motor? The deck alone is worth 100.

He didn't sell it - he gave it to me, lock stock and new tires.

(I reckon he didn't wanna mess with it, he makes enough cash...)

Ya gotta love neighbors like that!

Hell, it even had a fresh battery

they do have warranties, but it is usually voided when you run the engine without oil in it.

Ya know, one has to be careful with outdoor power equipment purchases from big-box stores.
I have a customer that bought a new self-propelled walk behind mower one spring. She never checked the oil. Turns out that it only had the remnants from the factory start-up. She ran it all summer on a medium sized yard. Wouldn't start the net spring. She told me that it had been harder and harder to start all summer and didn't seem to have the power it should have had.
Had to replace the engine (more cost-effective than a short block on a small mower like that)
I know Briggs put oil in every engine they make, fire it up, then suck the bulk of the oil back out and ship the engine. An engine will run for a surprisingly long time with little or no oil in it as evidenced by her story and the fact that I have demonstrated it to students numerous times.
Briggs engines have a big paper tag right on the fuel cap that say the engine was shipped without oil and the consumer should check that oil is present after purchase.
She claimed there was no such tag (it wasn't there when I got the job so either she took it off or the kid that put it together at the store took it off).
Anyway.........

we got a gas power washer that way Kal.
home dippstick sold it as ready to run.
15 minutes and it melted the bearing surface on the rod and smoked the crank cause of no oil. they were gonna throw it away.
we had a 8 hp brigs with a good bottom end, and cracked piston, bad head from eating a valve. put the 2 engines together for a 8 hp power washer that cost the set of gaskets and 2 hours to put the engines together.

CKAL - am I right in thinking that an 18 HP opposed Briggs twin (422707 series) is about an 829 cc engine?

I have one on hand that I'm seriously looking at to replace the Bullfrog's 15 horse Kohler with.

It came out of an old Murray, and I think it can be modded to make a "Wild Thang" out of..

I have a so called 'Crapsman' tractor that's 7 years old now and the only problems I have had are normal wear items, belts, blades and a new battery. Just finished mowing 2 acres with it and do this once a week.

Not sure why folks knock them so much as most of us can't afford a JD.

The first 2 numbers of the Briggs model number are the approximate cubic inches of displacement, thus the 42xxxx series engine has an approximate displacement of 42 ci. At approximately 16.4 cc per ci, that gives us 689 cc. More accurately, the 42xxxx opposed twin engine has a bore of 8.731 cm and a stroke of 5.795 cm.
My math gives a displacement of about 694 cubic centimeters.

I didn't know that - thanx again! I knew it was a bit upscale, I found a chart somewhere online but didn't copy it when I had the chance.

Too bad the rods in small engines won't take very high RPM's, if it was a 700cc motorcycle engine it would flatout scream...

*I did see something about a 422707 that someone mounted a blower on, I think I'll go search that link out to see what, how, and if it lasted very long

If I put a small block in a thing with a frame that short - I'd have to go find a Sprint Car track to run it on!

Although: I DO have an extra pair of V6 engines to play with (hopefully one of them is sold)

Half an acre, with a 4-brm house & detached garage. It's mostly going to be garden by next year, and BULLFROG is going to be a custom plow mule!!!

Yeah, but we take our messin' around serious down here not to mention racing...

Did you know Clay Millican (IHRA multi-World Champion) was one of my neighbors?

I got to git me my OWN wire feed. I'm tired of borrowing from across the street... (One of my other neighbors is heavy into offroading, and RAT-RODS)
