hydro lock

Iam going to be changing injectors in a week or so. is there any way to avoid oil in the cylinder all together? or the BEST way to make sure it is all out. or to get it all out.

I sucked mine out with a hand pump then spun the motor over with the GP's removed.
It is impossible to keep the oil out completely. Plan on getting some out.

Jim says if you have the injectors ready to go right there, you can pull one and slam the next one in and have no problems.

But he knows more about that.
i'd rather play it safe either way.

I heard of draining the heads by taking out off the plugs, and sucking them dry. Thats what I would do.

I drained my rails but some oil still got in there. Be safe and suck it out or atleast spin it with the GP's out. be sure to have the valve covers on there with a couple bolts finger tight. No gasket required.

Leave the valve covers off if you want to paint the walls with oil and possibly visit the hospital. LOL

You can pull the plugs in the rail, or just park uphill or downhill and remove the down hill injector first so it catches most of the oil and fuel. Let them drain for a short while before pulling the other injectors.

A vacuum pump works if you have all the stuff. I just turn the crank with a breaker bar (and rags placed over the holes because oil will shoot out an injector cup in a big stream that will travel about 12') a few times, then install the injectors with the glow plugs removed. Then I pull the IDM fuse and unplug the CPS and turn the engine over several times with the key (again lots of rags or set the valve covers back in place).

If you're worried about hydro-locking the engine, then you'll pay attention and get the fluids out so you don't have an issue. It's the ones who never worry about it that get in trouble.

My first injector job, i drained the rails and still wound up getting oil just like neal. but i locked my engine up and boy was i pissed. luckily i had a weak set of batteries and an almost worn out starter so I did no damage. All the other trucks I have done, I put rags over the GP holes (w/injectors in) followed by the valve covers and tap the starter. works great.

for a tool to suck the cylinders out go to tractor supply and get this vacuum pump!!! Liquivac Large Engine/Project Model Oil Changing System - 3000504 | Tractor Supply Company

that is the pump i use and it works AWESOME for draining the HPOP rez and the cylinders. much faster than a hand pump for sure. just don't vacuum gasoline with it. It turns out that will ruin the suction cup in the pump.

I never pull the plugs on the oil rails. waste of time b/c you will end up sucking the cylinders anyways, then blowing them out with the injectors in place and GP's removed and cranking the engine with the #22 and #9? under hood fuses pulled out or just don't plug in the injectors.
