What Have YOU Done To Your Truck Today?
#736
Well, I thought to myself...."suppose I should pull the drums off the rear and see what is going on with the brakes." Seven hours later when I had finished wheel bearings, seals, and a complete brake job I had answered the question. FYI, I had forgotten how much fun wheel bearings on a 9 inch were. (Sarcasm intended)

Not today but the other day I put in my new gauges I got for Father's day. It's nice to have working gauges again. My Equus set of gauges I had in there had went to crap. I had to take the voltmeter out and put in my 01 Montero Sport to keep an eye on the alternator, and the Water temp gauge just quit, it wouldn't move at all, and the oil pressure gauge I had to thump every time I cranked the truck to get the needle unstuck.

Had a little oil leak where the rear valley seal was before the new intake. So I pulled the distributor to double check the front. I'm getting oil at the dizzy,
Q: Do I need to seal the dizzy hold down bolt with RTV or tef tape?
I just replaced that last week, the old one didn't have any oil leaking around it????
I pulled the oil pressure sender, plugged the hole and cleaned everything up back there. Checked things with my rusty trusty mirror gadget and think I spotted a couple of pinhole leak points. The bead didn't squeeze out like I thought it would when I installed the intake, and it looked like the spots were I had to readjust my arm got a little thin were causing the leak. So I gooped it up like I was caulking the tile in the bathroom, we'll see if that works before ordering new intake gaskets.
Also put on the new valve cover gaskets, the old ones were squeezed and leaky, too. We'll see how it all holds.

Got things back together, went for a test drive and no leaks! I wasn't able to tell if the main leak was coming from the intake seal or the oil pressure switch, so I replaced that, too. So, rain aside, we're high and dry!
Also did a quick oil change and made the swich to Rotella 15-40. My engine almost sounds happier, I know it sounds goofy, but it sounds a lot more slick!
Also robbed the front bumper guards from my 79 parts wagon and put them on. WOW, that makes that little truck pop! FYI use a smaller tip on your cutting torch than I did when the carriage bolt won't bite to get the nut off. I ended up blowing a hole in a 90% bumper, on the far side of the bolt I was cutting. It might be covered by the guards, if I were to put them back on, but I'd need to knock the slag off to get it on there. Oh well, I've screwed up bigger things.
Finally got the interior panel clips, and cinched them down. I can honestly say there is hardly a rattle or squeek to be found in that pick up now.
On to the rust killing!

Had to take the pick up back to my shop this morning, I noticed a puddle of fresh oil under it this morning. Some jacka$$ before me must have tightened the oil plug too much, and sure enough the second time I change the oil, it doesn't want to get tight and seal up. I set my empty Rotella gallon jug under it to catch all the new oil I put in last night.
So we're prepped to pull the oil pan of the 79, sandblast and paint it this evening. Weeeeeeee....

73 4x4 Exhaust Fabrication... continued
'Been working on an exhaust system the past couple of weeks... you can see the that build a couple of pages back in this thread.
Mocked up a NASCAR-style side exhaust tip last weekend and got around to cutting, bending, and building:
The center mock up is made of poster board with more accurate dimensions:
The finished product. A plasma cutter is the only way to go!
'gonna weld it on tomorrow.
