crankshaft repair sleeve

just pulled the rear seal out of my 91 f159 , 5 l , and of course found the dreaded groove in the crank. i realize that i need a repair sleeve but have read as to how to install but have never done one. i have read that some alter the position of the seal in the bore in order to give a different riding surface . keep in mind that i have only basic tools and any advice re installation is appreciated would heating the sleeve prior to installation help sam

I have done my rear axles with the sleeves. I put them in boiling hot water and dropped them in place. Now on a crank shaft still in a truck, it would be little harder to "drop" in place. Just make sure you don't mar the sleeve and crank when installing and get the sleeve centered to where the seal rides. Also put loctight or equ on to seal the sleeve to crank, axle ect... or there could be a leak there.

If done properly you can use the standard seals and proper location for the seals.

You could also put it in the oven to avoid all the water...

Sam,

Check out this link, SKF Speedi-Sleeve Installation we use Speedi Sleeves alot at work. I work in a Hydraulic shop and they work good. They are pretty easy to install, use lock tight as recommended eariler. An insallation tool is supplied with the sleeve. I think you can get them from NAPA. If not look for a Bearing store in your Yellow Pages. I hope this helps.

o.k. i ordered in a repair sleeve that has a flange at the rear and comes with a driver to put it into position and everything seemed in order. however when closely looking at the flange it appears that it will rub against the surface that the seal normally sits up against. it appears that the flange is about 1/8 in too high. my concern is that with the sleeve rubbing here . i know that this will cease after a couple of thous. are wore off but then i have filings in the oil. is there something really stupid that i am missing or is it ok. sam
