Not a big deal if the information is still relevant.

even if the thread is 6 years old, the information is still valid and useful to others who might want to attempt this type of project for any number of reasons...

Age of Thread

It does not matter how old the post is. There was a question and I gave the correct answer and explained how to do it. The information is helpful to someone who may have wanted to this mod or someone in the future who might want to try it.

Bottom line is that I wanted it and I was successful in making the mod to the truck.

Thank you so much for this information!! 6 years later or not I understand most folks rather not deal with this type system but I will take the work to get this convenience on my truck. I do wonder though why not use all the original switches and solenoids to make this work? I have found a truck I could pull an electronic transfer case from just waiting to get everything in order to pull the trigger.

Just keep your hubs locked and shift into 4x4 with the lever when you need it, there is nothing wrong with doing that. People say you get better fuel mileage with the hubs unlocked but on a truck this size you won't notice a difference. I have owned my truck for almost 5 years and I calculate the fuel mileage every time I fill up, I have ran with the hubs locked and unlocked many times to see if it makes a difference and it does not. I don't know why anyone would want to switch to a less reliable electronic shift 4x4 system with the weaker failure prone vacuum hubs. It isn't just the vacuum part of the hubs that fail the hubs themselves have plastic parts in them and I have seen a few of them completely self destruct. A manual shift 4x4 with a good set of Warn or Mile marker hubs is very reliable.

Look I get it, everyone feels that this is a less reliable way of doing things... I also get that is your opinion not mine. High system I got it so be it I still want it. I am enjoying being a part of this community but I am beginning to be very frustrated by the one sided thoughts here. When I owned my GMC if someone had a new idea in the GM threads there were just as many people out there trying to make it happen for the guys as there is folks saying nay. Here I feel like some folks won’t you to bend to their will and no other. Some don’t like the auto-lock hubs some of us do stop telling those of us who prefer the auto-lock hubs to switch to manuals or keep our manuals.

AMEN brother!

REPS SENT TODAY (2018) to nexus1467 for a post from two years ago (2016), in response to a question originally asked eight years ago (2010).

Shame on anyone for ridiculing another member's effort to offer a solution in response to a question that clearly more than one member here has searched for, and found, thanks to someone answering an old thread with the only actionable information contained within the thread.

I don't want to visit a forum filled with ridicule at the expense of new members offering their advice to help others when they encounter a topic in the archives they have an interest and experience in. Posts like 1597349 and 15973818 are uncalled for, not helpful, and are not the way to welcome a new member who was making a POSTIVE contribution to this forum, regardless of when.

Rather, I want to visit a forum filled with helpful information like what nexus1467 offered in this thread.

I am currently trying to make this happen when I swap 2014 axles under my 95. That being said I can't seem to find the vacuum solenoid wires that you mention. Does the vacuum solenoid have to be from a specific model truck? They have ones for f-150's on amazon for 15$ and would like to use one of those. You mention that you will have 3 pins to use, but the solenoids I can find only seem to have 2 pins. Is the wire harness that is supposed to hook into the solenoid what has the three wires? If so do you have the part number for that?

Thanks for the writeup Nexus. This is the only thread I can find that has any useful information for doing this and want to make it work as this truck is one of a kind and think it would be a cool feature.

Thanks for any help!

I have a vacuum solenoid I removed from my truck when I switched to manual hubs. You can have it. I'm not sure if it still works though. It was when I removed it.

I happy that their are guys like you in this site that are willing to give a complete answer to old threads when you come across them...I found the info usefulas I have a 2001. No such thing as a dumb question on here and no such thing as an untimely answer. Thanks for sharing the info.
