How to Troubleshoot and Fix F150 4X4 1997-2003
#151
2-wheel drive solenoid (pictured location) 03 F-250 6.0l SD 4x4
Hi I have a DTC P 1876 on my F-250 and I can’t find the location where the solenoid is. I have read on the forum where they say it is. But there is nothing that even resembles anything like the sensor. Is it under a plate or cover? I want to replace it & have the replacement solenoid. Can someone please show either where in the shop manual it is or a “Picture of its physical location on the transfer case”?
thanks

Did you figure it out
HELLO REVYTRUCKS,
I KNOW THIS IS AN OLD POST, HOWEVER IT FOUND IT VERY INFORMATIVE AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT! HOWEVER, AFTER CHECKING EVERYTHING, I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM: FRONT 4WD IS NOT ENGAGING. HERE IS WHAT I HAVE CHECKED: 1) FUSE #23 IS GOOD. 2) 4X4 & LOW RANGE LIGHT COMES ON AND I CAN HEAR THE CLICKING BEHIND THE DASHBOARD. 3) WHEN "ENGAGED," THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT TURNS (SO I KNOW MY TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSFER CASE SWITCH IS WORKING), 4) BOTH SOLENOIDS IS WORKING (CAN HEAR AND FEEL THE CLICKING AFTER TURNING ON AND OFF THE 4X4; ALTHOUGH I WAS NOT ABLE TO CHECK THE VOLTAGE DUE TO NOT HAVING RIGHT TOOL). 5) CHECK BOTH VACUUM HOSES FOR ANY WEAR/TEAR BUT FOUND NO LEAKS, 6) BOTH VACUUM HOSES HAVE EQUAL SUCTION AT THE VACUUM ACTUATOR. 7) THE VACUUM ACTUATOR IS WORKING FINE AND DIAPHRAGM MOVES SMOOTHLY (I TRIED MOVING THE LEVER WITH HAND AND THEN BACK IN; WORKS FINE). 8) AND THE SHIFT FORK IS NOT BENT.
IN YOUR POST YOU ALSO RECOMMENDED THAT IT MIGHT BE AN ISSUE WITH FRONT DIFFERENTIAL, HOWEVER WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL THERE IS NO NOISES OR RACKING AS SUCH . I HAVE A 4X4 MECHANIC IN TOWN WHO I WENT BY FOR MORE ADVICE, HOWEVER AFTER EXPLAINING THE STEPS THAT YOU PROVIDED THEY ARE ADVISING ME THAT IT MIGHT BE AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSFER CASE. MY RESPONSE WAS THAT MY FRONT DRIVESHAFT WAS TURNING SO IT COULDNT BE THE TRANSFER CASE. SO THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I TAKE IT IN ON MONDAY (JULY 22, 2013) SO THAT THEY CAN GIVE MY TRUCK AN "GENERAL 4X4 CHECK UP" (AT NO COST, HOWEVER IF WILL CHARGE $150 IF THEY NEED TO DROP THE TRANSFER CASE )
PLEASE PLEASE PPPPPPLEAASE HELP ME . IVE SEARCHING MANY FORUMS, HOWEVER FOUND YOURS TO BEST EXPLAIN HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT.
ANY OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS OR ADVICE? ANY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
THANKS IN ADVANCE

97 F250 LD w/ 4wd - GEM modules and Other trouble shooting
Along this same thread - does anybody know if a GEM has to be reprogrammed?
The 4wd drive on my '97 F250 LD with ESOF quit working last October. It's been in two different shops since then and it is still not working. The first shop diagnosed the problem as the GEM. 2 different GEMs later, then a second shop, still no 4wd. I ordered a nearly identical GEM from a shop on ebay - installed it - still no 4wd. One difference I have noted is the replacement GEM does not "click" on startup (6 clicks) as the original GEM did. It is as if the GEM doesn't know the vehicle has 4wd. Hence the question - Does a GEM need to be programmed to the vehicle?
BTW, I'm now looking at the transfer case motor. If it is bad, then the GEM would quit trying to make it work and the front hubs would not even bother to try to engage. However, I didn't get a code for a bad transfer case motor.
Any ideas - would be appreciated.

4x4 problems
Good afternoon
I have a 1999 F150 extended cab 4.6 l XLT My problem is it goes in 4 wheel drive fine but when I drive about 20 10 miles per hour it starts bucking and pulling to the right And the only way I can get it out of 4 wheel drive is I put it in reverse and go backwards and it unlocks. My 2nd problem is I'd like to change out the automatic hubs to manual hubs but I don't know what Dana Axel I have or the spine number.
